🔥 Walsh River locals – we need a few more people to join the Walsh River Rural Fire Brigade 🔥
After what we all went through in the 2023 fires, I don’t think anyone around the river needs reminding how important it is to have a functioning local brigade.
We’ve recently lost a number of members and really need some new people to come on board to help keep the brigade strong.
You can join from 16 years old. Members aged 16–17 join as Registered Juniors with parent/guardian permission, and adult membership is from 18.
There are two main ways you can get involved:
🔥 Active / Firefighter members
If you want to be involved operationally, training is provided and you’re supplied with the firefighting PPE and safety gear you need. Active members can help at fires, planned burns, hazard-reduction work and other brigade operations once appropriately trained.
🤝 Support members
You don’t have to be on the fireground to be useful. We also need people who can help with things like brigade administration, equipment, logistics, community activities and the general work that keeps a small volunteer brigade functioning.
And importantly, there’s no expectation that you attend every fire or call-out. We’re volunteers. You respond when you’re available and work it around your job, family and everything else going on in life.
One thing we particularly need more hands for is planned burning and hazard-reduction work around the Walsh River area each year. After the fires we experienced in 2023, keeping fuel loads down and doing what we can to make the river safer is incredibly important.
You don’t need previous firefighting experience. Training is provided, and there are roles for people with all sorts of skills and levels of availability.
So if you live around the Walsh and have ever thought about getting involved, even if you’re unsure how much time you can give, please have a chat with us. A handful of extra local members would make a huge difference.
📩 Send me a message if you’re interested or want to know what’s involved.
And please share this with anyone around the river who might be keen. 🔥🚒
