🇹🇴 Happy Tonga Emancipation Day 🇹🇴

Today, 4 June, we join Tongans around the world in commemorating Emancipation Day — a significant moment in our nation's history when King George Tupou I abolished serfdom and granted freedom to the people of Tonga in 1862.

This day reminds us of the vision, courage, and leadership that helped shape Tonga into a proud and independent Kingdom founded on faith, unity, and respect.

As we reflect on this important occasion, may we continue to honour the legacy of those who came before us and uphold the values that strengthen our families, communities, and nation.

"Ko e ʻOtua mo Tonga ko hoku Tofiʻa"(God and Tonga are my inheritance)

From all of us at Pasifika TV & Radio, we wish our Tongan community a blessed and meaningful Tonga Emancipation Day.

🇹🇴 ʻOfa ke mou maʻu ha ʻaho tauʻatāina fiefia. 🇹🇴

The Australian Government is pleased to announce funding of NZD 2.3 million (AUD 1.9 million) of direct budget support for the Cook Islands. This is the second time Australia has provided this type of funding to the Cook Islands.

The package will support shared priorities across health, cyber cooperation, essential services and environmental protection. Funding will assist key civil society organisations, including the Cook Islands Family Welfare Association, Te Kainga Incorporated, Te Vaerua Incorporated, Punanga Turuturu Itivaine Inc, and the Cook Islands Civil Society Organisation, as well as the Centre of Excellence in Information Technology, supporting coding and robotics education for children and adults.

In the health sector, funding will support highly valued visits from Australian Ear, Nose and Throat surgical teams, alongside other visiting health teams, clinical training, and outreach to provide cervical cancer screening in remote communities. This funding is provided as a grant and not a loan, and reflects our closely shared priorities identified through close consultation with government and partners across the Cook Islands.

This initiative builds on our annual Community Grants Program and reflects the Australian Government’s ongoing commitment to the Cook Islands through our ‘Oa Tumanava Partnership. 🇦🇺🤝🇨🇰
