📊 Clubs and volunteers across the South West are already helping ensure the experiences of our region are represented in Regional Sport Victorias 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census.

So far, we’ve heard from 31 clubs and volunteers from across the South West, providing valuable insights into the opportunities, challenges, and support needs impacting community sport locally.

Some common themes are beginning to emerge:
✔️ Growing pressure on volunteer time and capacity
✔️ Increasing administrative and operational demands on clubs
✔️ A need for practical support that responds to local challenges

These insights will help inform future support, advocacy, and club development initiatives both within our region and across regional Victoria.

To provide more clubs and volunteers with the opportunity to participate, the Census has been extended by one week.

⏳ The survey will now close on Sunday 21 June.

If your club hasn’t had the opportunity to contribute yet, now is the time.

🤝 We’d also love the support of our local partners, including Southern Grampians Shire Moyne Shire Council Warrnambool City Corangamite Shire Glenelg Shire Council

Hampden FNL Warrnambool & District FNL Warrnambool Cricket Hockey South West PBA - Portland Basketball Warrnambool Basketball and community stakeholders, in helping spread the word and ensuring clubs from across the South West are represented.

📣 Are you a League or Association across the South West? Help ensure your clubs voices are heard.

As part of the 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census, we’re encouraging leagues and associations across the South West to help share the survey with affiliated clubs.

We know clubs are navigating a changing environment – from volunteer sustainability and governance pressures, through to participation trends and facility challenges. Capturing these experiences helps build a clearer understanding of what clubs across our region need to remain strong, sustainable, and connected into the future.

📣 Local government plays an important role in strengthening community sport across the South West

As the 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census continues to roll out, we’re encouraging our local government partners across the South West to help ensure clubs and volunteers in your communities are represented.

Community sport contributes significantly to local wellbeing, connection, participation, and liveability - and understanding the experiences of clubs at a grassroots level is critical to shaping future planning, support, and investment across our region.

We invite to help amplify the Census through local club networks, newsletters, and community channels to ensure as many local voices as possible are heard.

By contributing to a stronger evidence base, together we can better understand the changing needs of community sport across the South West and support more informed, locally responsive outcomes into the future.

South West Sport is thrilled to bring you episode three of our six-part junior sport series, we sit down once again with registered sports psychologist Joel Curtis from Endeavour Wellness to explore one of the biggest factors in a young athlete’s sporting journey — confidence.

Is confidence something kids are simply born with, or is it shaped by the environments around them? From coaches and parents to teammates, social media and performance expectations, we unpack the many factors that influence how young athletes see themselves both on and off the field.

Joel shares practical insights into how confidence is built, why resilience matters just as much as talent, and how adults involved in local sport can help create environments where kids feel supported to learn, grow and enjoy the game.

This is a valuable conversation for parents, coaches, volunteers and young athletes alike, focused on helping kids build healthy self-belief and positive lifelong connections to sport.

Behind every strong sporting club are volunteers willing to step forward and lead.
It was fantastic to see local club leaders come together this week for the first Respect in Sport Standard Stream 2 workshop, demonstrating their commitment to creating safe, inclusive and respectful environments for everyone involved in community sport.
Proudly supported by Warrnambool City Council, the workshop provided clubs with practical tools to strengthen their culture, reflect on current practices, and identify opportunities to create more welcoming and sustainable environments for participants, volunteers and families.
This is the first step in a broader process that will see clubs undertake a Gender Equity Club Audit, participate in an Audit and Action Workshop, and develop a tailored Respect in Sport Action Plan.
Thank you to all club leaders who contributed to the discussion. We look forward to continuing to support clubs as they take meaningful action to ensure sport remains a place where everyone feels safe, valued and welcome.

To mark the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, the South West Sport team visited Budj Bim yesterday and reflected on this year’s theme, All In.

Walking on Gunditjmara Country and learning about the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape and kooyang (eel) systems was a powerful reminder of the deep knowledge and connection First Nations peoples have held with Country for thousands of years.

The All In theme reminds us that reconciliation requires everyone to play a role in building stronger relationships, understanding and respect. We appreciate and thank Reuben sharing his knowledge and culture with us.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to listen, learn and share conversations as a team, and remain committed to using sport to help create meaningful change in our communities.

📣 Why should your club complete the 2026 census?

As part of the 2026 Regional Victorian Community Sport Census, clubs across South West have the opportunity to go into the draw to win up to $2,500 in tailored support from South West Sport, with one club selected from each participating region.

We know that every club is different - and the most valuable support is often the support that responds directly to local needs, priorities, and challenges.

For clubs in South West this support could include:

👉 Providing resources to help manage sponsorship enquiries, along with guided assistance to develop sponsorship packages and policies.

👉 Engaging South West Sport’s strategic planning service to create a clear, long‑term strategic plan that defines your club’s goals, sets priorities, and establishes a sustainable roadmap for the future.

👉 Reviewing your club’s current volunteer recruitment processes and role guides, and offering supported assistance to implement effective volunteer coordination practices.

By taking part in the Census, your club will not only help shape future support and advocacy for community sport but one lucky winner from each participating region will also have the opportunity to access tailored support designed to strengthen their club.

⏳ The Census closes June 14th.
