Warrnambool and District Community Hospice

Warrnambool and District Community Hospice Free, volunteer-led palliative care at home across Warrnambool, Moyne & Corangamite. We welcome any donation large or small. Vic. 3280.

Supporting people with life-limiting illness to stay at home, surrounded by comfort, care and community. Warrnambool & District Community Hospice was established to give South West Victorians the opportunity to die at home, cared for by the people they love. We are breaking new ground with a free alternative to inpatient care, provided by a dedicated team of volunteers; whilst also working to help

the wider community better prepare for the end of life. As a volunteer-based organisation with no regular source of income or government funding, Hospice is reliant on community support. Donations and bequests will allow us to continue our current service, meet growing demand and deliver wide-reaching benefits to the people of South West Victoria.

β€’ The success of the Hospice is reliant on both volunteers and community support. Your support will safeguard the future of hospice and ensure this vital service is available to the community when it is needed most.

β€’ Over 70% of people want to die at home, less than 15% get to achieve their wish. Your support will contribute to fewer unnecessary admissions to hospitals and lead to a better end of life experience for terminally ill people and those who care for them.

β€’ Once operational expenses have been met, donations and bequests will be able to fund service expansion and deliver even greater community benefit.

β€’ The people of South West Victoria are fortunate to have an organisation as unique and valuable as Hospice, it is important we recognise this and do what we can as a community to ensure the continuation and growth of services. Donations received will help offset the costs involved in getting volunteers back into homes in a Covid-safe manner. If you would like to donate online please go to https://www.givenow.com.au/Warrnamboolhospice. Cheques can be mailed to P.O.Box 755, Warrnambool. All donations are tax deductible.

Something important is growing across Australia. 🌱

Compassionate Communities Australia has scheduled a national network meeting in June, bringing together organisations from right across the country who are working to build communities where no one faces serious illness, dying, or grief alone.

Here in the South West, we're proud to be part of that movement.

The vision is simple but profound: that communities - not just health systems - hold and care for people at the end of life. That neighbours, friends, local businesses, and everyday people are resourced and empowered to show up. That dying is understood as a part of living, not something to be handed over and hidden away.

We're also supporting the push by Palliative Care Victoria and Carers SA to have governments recognise the concept of Compassionate States, embedding this approach into health policy as a funded, supported part of how we care for each other.

It starts locally. It starts here. And it starts with you following along, sharing this work, and being part of the conversation. πŸ’™

Following on from National Palliative Care Week, we wanted to share some words that we think are worth sitting with. πŸ’œ

Palliative Care Australia reminds us that quality palliative care is for everyone living with a life-limiting illness, regardless of age, diagnosis, or where they call home. It is about living as well as possible, for as long as possible, in the place that feels right for you. And the earlier those conversations start, the better, for you, and for the people who love you.

At WDC Hospice, this is the work we show up for every day. If you or someone you know could benefit from our free Hospice in the Home service, please reach out.

Trivia night with a purpose! 🍺🧠

For the entire month of June, the Seanchai Irish Bar is dedicating their Thursday night trivia to fundraising for Warrnambool & District Community Hospice.

Every Thursday. 7pm. And tables book out fast.

Grab your smartest mates, settle your most heated debates about which one of you is actually good at history, and come along for a brilliant night out - knowing every round is raising money for something that genuinely matters in our community.

Our Hospice in the Home service is free for families who need it. Nights like this help keep it that way.

See you at the Seanchai πŸ™Œ

Wednesday 17 June | 2:30 – 4:30pm | Hospice House, Deakin University, Warrnambool

We're gathering for a practical education session, a chance to refresh your skills, reconnect with your fellow volunteers, and come together as a community.

This session also doubles as our belated National Volunteer Week celebration, because our volunteers deserve more than a single week of recognition, but we'll take the excuse to come together and say thank you properly.

Group 16 will also be celebrating their graduation that evening, so it promises to be a wonderful day all round.

All volunteers welcome, whether you're brand new or have been with us for years.

Last week, a group of our wonderful volunteers attended the Warrnambool City Council's Volunteer Week recognition event, and what a lovely afternoon it was.

Surrounded by hundreds of volunteers from across our community, it was a great reminder of just how much quiet, dedicated, generous work happens in our region every single day. We are proud to be part of it.

And then there was Helen. πŸ˜‚

When asked to gather in the corner for a group photo, Helen Dunn took the instruction very literally. Not a dunce by any stretch , but she absolutely played the part, and we all had a great laugh.

Thank you to Warrnambool City Council for celebrating volunteers across our region, and thank you - as always - to our incredible Hospice volunteer community. You make everything we do possible.

What a week. 🎨

The Warrnibald Festival of Arts has wrapped for another year, and we are completely overwhelmed with gratitude.
But first, congratulations to all our winners. What an extraordinary standard of work this year. The talent among this community never ceases to amaze us!

To every artist who entered their work, every volunteer who showed up for a shift, every visitor who walked through the doors, bid on a piece, bought a ticket, or simply shared the event with a friend, every sponsor who made it possible, and every committee member who has poured their heart into building this event into what it is today.

Thank you. From the bottom of our hearts.

Every dollar raised through Warrnibald goes directly toward supporting the work of Warrnambool & District Community Hospice, helping people in our region spend the end of their life at home, in comfort, surrounded by the people they love.

A special thank you to our sponsors for making these prizes possible:
Fletcher Jones Family Foundations, FSR Equip, The Thomas O'Toole Foundation, The A.L. Lane Foundation, The Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation, William and Lindsay Brodie Foundation, AGH Foundation, GRIT Legal, Taits Legal, Star Printing, and McLaren Hunt Financial Group.

You can still see the work. πŸ–ΌοΈ The full exhibition has moved to The F Project, 224 Timor St, Warrnambool - open now.

Meet Group 16 - our newest cohort of Hospice in the Home volunteers, and we could not be prouder to welcome them into the WDCH family.

This smiling, enthusiastic group began their training last month in Port Fairy, and what a start it was. Over several weekends across Port Fairy Community House and Hospice House in Warrnambool, they have shown extraordinary compassion, curiosity, and commitment every step of the way.

Their training covers the 9 Palliative Care Victoria volunteering modules - a comprehensive, evidence-based program that was reviewed and updated during 2025 and officially launched in April 2026. We are especially proud that this update has a local connection: our own Ann Body, former Hospice Support Coordinator and current volunteer, was part of the working party that reviewed one of these modules. And our founder, Dr Eric Fairbank, along with Felicity Barker from St John of God Warrnambool Hospital, also contributed to the updated content.

It means Group 16 is stepping into their role equipped with some of the most current, thoughtfully developed palliative care volunteer training in the country, with a little piece of our own community baked into it.

Welcome, Group 16. The families you will support are lucky to have you.

Someone you love changes, and at first you're not sure what you're seeing. πŸ’™

Maybe they repeat the same question three times in an hour. Maybe they can't find the word they're looking for, or they get turned around somewhere familiar. Maybe it's something quieter ... a withdrawal, a distance you can't quite name.

Living alongside dementia - whether you're the person experiencing it, or the person who loves them - can feel isolating, confusing, and exhausting. And too often, people navigate it without the knowledge or support they deserve.

That's why we're so glad to be sharing this upcoming free session from Dementia Australia:

Understanding Dementia
Monday 15 June | 11.30am – 1.00pm | Archie Graham Community Centre, 118 Timor St, Warrnambool

This session will cover the types of dementia, what it feels like to live with it, how to provide support, and where to find help. It's open to anyone recently diagnosed, family members and carers, and anyone in our community who wants to understand more.

This session is free, but bookings are essential. To book: https://loom.ly/1gA3Ldc (or snap the QR code in the tile)

You don't have to figure this out alone. 🫢

Our trusty red rocket, made possible by the ongoing generosity of Warrnambool Auto Group and Warrnambool Chery, is out and about again today, this time picking up the mail and flying the flag down Liebig Street.

It's the everyday stuff, but it all adds up. This partnership means we can stay focused on what matters most, being there for people and families when they need us most.

If you've ever given our little red car a wave, consider this a wave right back. Thank you for being part of our community. πŸ™

Something exciting is taking shape on the Great South Coast. 🌊

The first meeting of our Compassionate Communities Great South Coast Working Group was held on 16 April at Co-Lab in Warrnambool, and it was an incredibly productive session.
In attendance: Warrnambool City Council, Respect, and two representatives from South West Healthcare.

Everyone in the room shared a deep commitment to doing more together, streamlining services and making sure people get the right support at the right time.

Some sobering facts shared at the meeting:
πŸ›οΈ There is a 180 bed shortfall in Aged Care in our region, predicted to grow to 340 by 2040
πŸ₯ On any given night, 20 people occupy acute hospital beds because they don't have enough support to go home, but have nowhere else to go
πŸŒ™ Overnight respite is a significant gap in current services

This working group will meet quarterly and grow to include more service providers. Together, we can make a real difference. Watch this space.
