52 students. 16 businesses. 21 industry professionals.

That was the recipe for a fantastic 2026 Moyne Trades Taster!

Students from Mortlake College P12 and Hawkesdale P12 College spent the day exploring careers through hands-on activities delivered by local employers and industry experts. From machinery and power tools to marine mechanics, emergency services, environmental science and health careers, students had the opportunity to try, ask questions and learn from people working in these industries every day.

A special thank you to Community Bank Port Fairy & District, our event sponsor.
Chair Damien Gleeson spoke to students about the importance of making choices that open doors to future opportunities and explained how Community Bank profits are returned to local communities through projects and initiatives that benefit local people.

The Moyne Trades Taster is one of those initiatives, helping young people discover career pathways and connect with the incredible businesses and organisations that make our region strong.

Thank you to Damien, the Community Bank team and all of the industry partners who helped make the day possible.

Last week, Matt Porter represented Neil Porter Legacy at the Deakin FreelancingHUB showcase, where student teams presented projects they had worked on over the past 11 weeks.

NPL was very grateful to partner with a Deakin student team who designed and delivered a comprehensive impact evaluation system, a genuine organisational need that had previously gone unmet.

Over the project, the team:
• Researched and designed evidence-based surveys to capture program outcomes from students, schools and industry partners
• Enhanced NPL’s Airtable database
• Built a reporting dashboard to visualise participation and stakeholder feedback
• Developed onboarding documentation

This was a real-world brief with genuine organisational impact, and the system delivered will directly support NPL’s future grant and sponsorship applications, help demonstrate the value of our programs, and allow us to continue monitoring our programs for continual improvements we can make.

The team showed a strong combination of technical capability, professionalism and initiative throughout the project, turning an open-ended organisational challenge into a practical solution with lasting impact.

Neil Porter Legacy is incredibly grateful for the team’s contribution and super impressed with the quality of work delivered.

A huge thank you to Deakin University and the Deakin FreelancingHUB for creating opportunities like this, connecting students with meaningful community-based projects and creating real impact.

This week, Neil Porter Legacy was proud to support 30 students from Terang College, from Prep right through to Year 12, to attend the Otway Energy Forum & Community Morning Tea in Peterborough.

The visit was part of the students’ preparation for Terang College's upcoming Humans & Habitat Environmental Forum, where students will explore environmental sustainability and the relationship between people, industry and the environment.

A few weeks ago, we visited the school to help students prepare for the event and learn more about the businesses attending. Students then worked with their teachers to develop questions to ask industry representatives on the day.

One of the highlights was a conversation between a younger student and Ollie Glade-Wright, Environment & Sustainability Manager at Amplitude Energy. After asking whether any of the gas wells were “as old as dinosaurs”, students learned it dates back to the Cretaceous period, around 90 million years ago, making it older than a T-Rex!

It was fantastic to see students of all ages asking thoughtful questions and engaging so confidently with industry professionals.

A big thank you to Amplitude Energy for hosting such an engaging and educational morning, and to CO2CRC, APA Group and Lochard Energy for being such a valuable part of the experience.

These opportunities help students build confidence, grow their curiosity and see firsthand the many ways industry and community can work together to shape a more sustainable future.

Recently, the VM students from Derrinallum P12 College headed to Camperdown for a hands-on careers day, connecting with local businesses and professionals to explore the many pathways available right here in our region.

Their first stop was Loaf and Lounge, where Bakery Manager Sharon Johnson shared her career journey and spoke about the qualities employers value most: showing up on time, being a team player and having a willingness to learn. Sharon’s passion for her work and pride in her team left a lasting impression on the students.

Next, the group visited Camperdown Woolworths, where Justine gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the many roles involved in running a busy retail business. From the shop floor to day-to-day operations, students gained a real understanding of the wide variety of career opportunities available in retail.

The final stop was Camperdown Hospital, where Clinical Nurse Monique O’Sullivan spoke about the many career pathways within healthcare and the important role every team member plays in keeping a health service running smoothly each day.

Experiences like these help students build confidence, ask questions and connect classroom learning with real-world opportunities in their own community.

A big thank you to Sharon, Justine and Monique for generously sharing your time, knowledge and stories with our students. These conversations matter, and they help shape what comes next.
Big thanks also to Beach Energy for their generous support of NPL's work in Corangamite Shire. Their generous support allows NPL to be a consistent presence in the Shire and work regularly with Corangamite students.

Recently, we hosted an exciting industry visit for Warrnambool South West TAFE students at Fitzmedia Productions / South West Local News, a leading local media company specialising in news, videography, live streaming and broadcasting.

Students were welcomed by Liam, Sharna, Tom and Matt from the Fitzmedia team, who shared the story behind the business, the different roles within the company, and their own personal journeys from school into the workforce. Then it was time for the students to step into the world of media themselves.

The group split into two teams, with one group creating a news reel while the other explored camera work and conducted interviews like on-the-ground reporters. The hands-on experience gave students the opportunity to build confidence, ask thoughtful questions and experience the fast-paced world of media production firsthand.

Most importantly, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, try something new, and discover career pathways they may never have considered before.

A huge thank you to the Fitzmedia team for generously opening their doors, sharing their knowledge and inspiring the next generation of storytellers, creatives and media professionals. These real-world experiences are exactly what helping young people connect education with industry is all about.
And thanks to SWTAFE for their supportive partnership, allowing NPL to work with their students.

Huge thanks to East Warrnambool Football Netball Club for their generous support of the NPL! EWFNC's history stretches back over 120 years. This history is recognised with a plaque that was recently unveiled at Reid Oval. The oval where the Bombers were the original tenants. There are several connections between our organisations including the red & black colours, and we're very grateful to receive support from this great community organisation. EWFNC's support will assist the NPL to continue supporting young people into rewarding careers.

Emmanuel College Warrnambool VPC students visited the Western District Food Share facility in Warrnambool this week to learn more about how the organisation supports the local community. During their visit, they met with Amanda, who shared insights into the important role Foodshare plays in collecting, sorting and distributing food to people experiencing hardship across the Western District.

Students gained a deeper understanding of what Amanda and the team do each day at the warehouse, from managing large deliveries to ensuring food is safely stored and ready for distribution. They also had the opportunity to get involved by helping pack orders, giving them a hands-on look at how the process works and the teamwork involved behind the scenes.

The group also learnt about the importance of reducing food waste and how donations from businesses and the community help keep the service running. Amanda encouraged students to use a FOGO bin as a simple but impactful way to reduce food waste, while also helping them understand the many ways Foodshare supports local families and individuals doing it tough.

Experiences like this give students valuable insight into careers and organisations that make a real difference in their communities. A big thank you to Amanda and the Western District Foodshare team for welcoming students and sharing the important work they do every day.

VPC students from Emmanuel College recently stepped into the real world of the workforce, hearing firsthand from Jeremy Eccles, Co-owner of Bojangles Restaurant, about what it takes to build a career. He took students behind the scenes, showing how the business operates day-to-day.

Jeremy spoke about the challenges he faced in his secondary school years and the moment he chose to commit to hard work and create a future for himself. He started out delivering pizzas, but what set him apart was his approach to the role. Between deliveries, he swept floors, helped with dishes, and looked for ways to contribute beyond what was expected.

Today, Jeremy leads the restaurant side of Bojangles, working on the floor alongside his team and helping run a business that employs up to 70 people across a wide range of hospitality roles. When asked what he looks for in staff, his answer was clear: strong work ethic, genuine interest, good communication, and the ability to take initiative.

This is what Neil Porter Legacy is all about. Connecting students with industry, making career pathways visible, and showing that there is no single way forward.
When students can hear real stories, ask real questions, and see workplaces up close, it builds confidence, sparks ambition, and helps them take their next step with purpose.

A big thank you to Jeremy and the Bojangles team for opening their doors and making this experience possible. Big thanks also to the Department of Education, Victoria, through the Strategic Partnerships Program, for making this session possible.
