Mentors in the arts, Hedy and Peter Kirkbride, this is the third of the Vanguard Interviews Series.

The first of the of artist leaders and mentors in the West Gippsland region is up. This is a collaboration with The Magic If to record the stories of each Vanguard artist to encourage and nurture the wider arts community. The interviews are short - around an hour - and it is impossible to capture everything a person has done and been in their community in such a short time. I'd love to hear your stories, memories and thoughts about each Vanguard artist too. Our archive is growing, thanks for data storage from Select Office Supplies Office Choice Warragul
The first interview is with David Steele - music teacher, performer, and mentor.

The Vanguard Interviews explore the lives and work of senior artists in West Gippsland. The first interview is with musician, David Steele.

An for West Gippsland— with thanks to John Mai at and in collaboration with .magic.if 🎭 💡 we have begun recording some of the local vanguard of artists as they tell stories of their work in the arts in this area. In the future, this archive will form the basis for new works to be developed, with the consent of and active collaboration with each individual artist. ➡️ ‼️Who should be on our list? we don’t want to forget anyone! Artists around 65-70 years (or more or less!) who have persisted in their chosen art form despite difficulties 🙏🏼

Some of the practical outworking of 'less is necessary' (originally coined by Kate Larsen) in the arts today - article by Jennifer Mills.

Adhocracy, Vitalstatistix’s experimental hothouse for work in development, is held over four days in Yerta Bulti (Port Adelaide) each year. It’s a rare opportunity for artists from around the country to come together, and for South Australian audiences to witness the alchemy of work in progress....

This month’s artist chat is Cheryl Cook. Repeated this morning on 3RR-FM103.1 at 9am during Paul Strickland’s West Gippsland Week. This sounds like a great discussion between local writer, Rod Williams, and Cheryl, who is currently working on a fibre-based installation left to the elements out in nature ✨ 🧐

Here's a zine by author Anwen Crawford which has been published in full online - the art is writing, but the economic consequences are the same. Here's hoping the new federal Cultural paper (link in comments) might start to change the environment for artists suffering burnout.
