Beyond Subsistence

Beyond Subsistence Beyond Subsistence is a non-profit organisation that undertakes forestry and agroforestry development. Trees are a key ingredient in the fight against poverty.

The integration of trees into farming environments can replenish soils, provide fuel for cooking, food and medicinal products as well as valuable timber for building. Beyond Subsistence works to support, train and empower local people to bring about long-term, sustainable improvements in the areas of farm productivity, nutrition, housing, community wealth and the environment.

A wonderful 4 days in Uganda delivering a workshop for our facilitators establishing agroforestry projects in local schools. These projects provide children with hands-on learning and nutritious food while learning to care for their environment. Thanks to our project partners!

Our Story

Beyond Subsistence is a development organisation that invests in rural communities in Africa. Our programs are designed to train, equip and empower national people to become productive, diversified and sustainable farmers. Our goal is to bring about long-term improvements to people’s lives and landscapes. The benefits and flow on effects also positively impact health and nutrition, housing, education, community wealth and the environment.

Our agroforestry training programs are teaching farmers and school children how to integrate trees back into their landscapes to make their farms more profitable, diversified and sustainable; and Our fuel-efficient stove programs are teaching farmers and school children how to build and use simple clay stoves to reduce firewood use - in addition to reducing exposure to smoke inhalation which causes an estimated 4 million premature deaths each year (World Health Organisation).

Our international work is undertaken entirely through volunteers. We rely on donations, sponsorships and community support. There are so many wonderful advantages to this work and we are seeing some amazing results and flow on affects.
