Warragul Community House

Warragul Community House We welcome people from all walks of life providing a high standard of learning, support & friendship Aims
The Warragul Community House aims to provide:
1.

The Warragul Community House is a not for profit, charitable organisation that seeks to provide the local community with a resource where it can engage in educational and social activities that reduce isolation, increase employment opportunities and provide skills for living and leisure. WCH was established on 3 December 1978, by a group of six very forward thinking women who decided to develop in

formal learning situations and activities in a warm, supportive environment. Through the establishment of the organisation they sought to address the problems of isolation, loneliness, alcohol abuse, racial discrimination, financial hardship and unemployment. These goals remain relevant to the activities of the house today. A welcoming, accepting, safe and comfortable environment where staff and participants can be encouraged to learn, to develop peer support and enhance social interaction;
2. An environment and resources where there is an opportunity for participants to develop skills, explore life direction, and develop their capacity for independence;
3. The opportunity for community empowerment in relation to identified community issues, e.g. domestic violence, drug abuse, homelessness, financial distress, food insecurity; and
4. Community connectivity through networking opportunities.

“Warragul Community House helped me regain my confidence around work.” 💛

Many of our volunteers first come through the doors of Warragul Community House looking to learn something new, connect with others or access support. For some, that journey comes full circle.

That was the case for Lisa.

After benefiting from the House's programs and services herself, Lisa decided she wanted to give back to the place that had helped her rebuild her confidence and self-esteem.

“There’s a lot of good here through the education programs and services,” she said.

“It’s really helped me regain my confidence around work.”

For the past six months, Lisa has been volunteering one afternoon each week, supporting the House through a range of administrative tasks, helping with washing and assisting with policy and procedure updates.

Like many volunteers, Lisa's work happens both behind the scenes and alongside the day-to-day activities that help keep the House running smoothly.

What Lisa enjoys most is the sense of teamwork and achievement that comes from volunteering.

“I enjoy the camaraderie and the variety of challenges I get to take on,” she said.

“There’s always something to do, and it makes me feel like I’ve achieved something.”

Her story highlights something special about community houses. They are not just places where people receive support. They are places where people build confidence, discover new opportunities and often find ways to give back to others.

When asked what she would say to someone considering volunteering, Lisa encouraged people to find a role that suits them.

“You should do it. It’s important to find something that fits your lifestyle and personality, but it can be a really rewarding experience.”

Something people may be surprised to learn about Lisa is that she was a practising Muslim for 30 years.

For Lisa, volunteering has been an opportunity to continue growing, contributing and building on the confidence she has worked so hard to develop.

Thank you, Lisa, for the energy, commitment and positivity you bring to Warragul Community House. Your journey is a wonderful reminder of the difference community support can make, and how those who benefit from it often become some of its greatest champions. 💛

Sometimes volunteering begins with a simple question.

"Do you need any volunteers?" 💛

Six years ago, after recently moving to the area, Annie walked into Warragul Community House to see what programs and activities were available. Having been familiar with community houses and the important role they play in supporting local communities, she was keen to get involved.

Before long, she became part of the volunteer team.

Today, Annie volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, helping welcome community members, assisting with administrative tasks and supporting the day-to-day activities of the House.

While the tasks may vary, what keeps Annie coming back is the opportunity to connect with people.

“I really enjoy the social connection and being able to help people in any way I can,” she said.

It's a simple statement, but it captures something at the heart of community houses. Every day, people walk through our doors looking for information, support, friendship, learning opportunities or simply a welcoming place to belong. Volunteers like Annie help make those connections possible. ☕🏡

For Annie, volunteering has also been a way to become part of her new community. What started as a visit to find out what was on offer has grown into six years of giving back and helping others feel welcome.

When asked what she would say to someone thinking about volunteering, Annie's advice was straightforward.

“It is a great place with wonderful people, worth considering if you are thinking about becoming a volunteer.”

Something people may be surprised to learn about Annie is that despite being an introvert, she speaks two languages, Greek and Cypriot, and has worked in a wide variety of roles throughout her life. 🇬🇷

Her story is a reminder that volunteering comes in many forms and that some of the quietest people can have the biggest impact through their kindness, reliability and willingness to help others.

Thank you, Annie, for six years of dedication, warmth and support. Through every greeting, conversation and act of kindness, you've helped make Warragul Community House a place where people feel welcomed, connected and valued. 💛

“It feels like family.” 💛

For some people, retirement is a chance to slow down. For others, it's an opportunity to keep sharing their skills, experience and passion in new ways.

For the past seven years, Rach has been an important part of the Warragul Community House story.

After retiring from a teaching career in Melbourne, Rach joined the House as Programs Officer, helping coordinate and support the many courses, activities and opportunities offered to the community. Four years later, when her staff role came to an end, she wasn't quite ready to say goodbye.

Instead, she stayed on as a volunteer.

Today, Rach volunteers twice a week, supporting the Programs Officer and helping behind the scenes with data management, information updates and a range of administrative tasks that help keep the House running smoothly.

While much of her work happens away from the spotlight, her contribution helps ensure programs and services continue to reach the people who need them most.

For Rach, the greatest reward is the sense of belonging she has found at the House.

“I enjoy the strong sense of connection at Warragul Community House,” she said.

“It feels like family and gives me a real sense of giving back to the community.”

That feeling of connection is something many of our volunteers speak about. The House is more than a building or a collection of programs. It's a place where people come together, support one another and build lasting friendships. 🏡☕

When asked what advice she would give to someone considering volunteering, Rach didn't hesitate.

“Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with others, feel useful, and find a real sense of purpose in life.”

Something people may be surprised to learn about Rach is her musical side. 🎶 She taught flute, conducted choirs and spent many years helping others discover the joy of music. And if that wasn't enough, she also played competitive pool in local pub competitions. 🎱

Thank you, Rach, for your continued dedication, knowledge and support. Even after finishing your staff role, you've continued to give your time so generously to the House and the community we serve. Volunteers like you help make Warragul Community House feel like family for so many people.

“GO FOR IT!” 💛

That was Joy’s immediate response when asked what she would say to someone thinking about volunteering.

For the past two years, Joy has been sharing her time, kindness and listening ear with the many people who walk through the doors of Warragul Community House.

Joy first connected with the House after completing a computer course. While leaving one day, she noticed a sign inviting volunteers to get involved and decided to put her hand up.

Having previously volunteered at her local hospital, she already understood the value of giving back to the community and supporting others.

Today, Joy volunteers for half a day each week, helping create the welcoming atmosphere that makes Warragul Community House feel like home for so many people.

Her role is a social one. Some days she chats with people who are new to the area and looking to make connections. Other days she spends time with people who may be feeling overwhelmed, uncertain or simply in need of a friendly conversation and a warm welcome. ☕💬

For Joy, the best part of volunteering is that every day brings something different.

“I enjoy every day because no two days are the same,” she said.

“I’m always learning new skills, meeting new people, and sharing plenty of laughs with a wonderful group of fellow volunteers.”

When asked what advice she would give to someone considering volunteering, Joy’s enthusiasm was impossible to miss.

“GO FOR IT! There’s nothing more rewarding than helping others, especially those who may be doing it tough.”

“A little kindness, dignity, or even just a cuppa and a chat can make a big difference.”

Those simple words capture something special about community houses. Sometimes the most important support we can offer isn't a program or a service. Sometimes it's taking the time to listen, connect and remind someone that they matter.

Something people may be surprised to learn about Joy is that she has an adventurous spirit and a determination that keeps her moving forward no matter the challenge.

“I won’t give up!”

Thank you, Joy, for the warmth, compassion and positivity you bring to Warragul Community House. Through every conversation, every welcome and every act of kindness, you help make our community a little more connected and a little more caring. 💛

Behind every community organisation are people quietly giving their time, skills and experience to help others.

For the past eight years, Rosemary has been one of those people at Warragul Community House. 💛

Rosemary first started volunteering because she wanted an opportunity to give back to the community. What she found was a welcoming environment where she could put her skills to good use while helping support the work of the House.

These days, you'll find Rosemary volunteering on Friday mornings, working behind the scenes on grant applications, funding proposals and related projects. While much of her role involves computer-based work, the impact reaches far beyond a desk.

Many of the programs, activities and opportunities available through Warragul Community House rely on securing funding and support, making Rosemary's contribution an important part of helping the House continue to grow and respond to community needs.

For Rosemary, the greatest reward comes from knowing her efforts contribute to something bigger.

"I enjoy the strong sense of purpose, knowing that the work I do contributes to making a real difference in the community."

When asked what advice she would give to someone considering volunteering, Rosemary encourages people to start with their interests and strengths.

"Have a conversation with the program you're interested in, think about what you enjoy doing, and see how your skills align with their needs."

It's a reminder that volunteering isn't one-size-fits-all. Whether your strengths are working with people, gardening, administration, teaching, cooking, maintenance or project work, there are many different ways to make a contribution.

Something people may be surprised to learn about Rosemary is that she has been learning German for the past five years. 🇩🇪

Thank you, Rosemary, for the dedication, expertise and thoughtful support you have shared with Warragul Community House over the past eight years. Your contribution helps create opportunities that benefit our community long after the work is done.

“It’s a friendly, supportive and very rewarding place to volunteer.” 💛

may have come to a close, but we’re still celebrating the wonderful volunteers who help make Warragul Community House such a welcoming and supportive place for our community.

Today, we’re shining a light on Heather, who has been volunteering with the House for the past four years.

Heather first became involved through her interest in education, tutoring and helping others learn new skills. After coming across some of Warragul Community House’s course guides, she decided to get involved and quickly found herself becoming an important part of the House community.

These days, Heather volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday from, helping deliver one of the House’s valuable free learning support services.

Her role includes providing one on one tutoring in basic computer skills, facilitating group classes that can run for several hours, and assisting with bookings and administrative support connected to the sessions. 💻☕

What Heather values most is the atmosphere people experience when they walk through the doors.

“I really enjoy the welcoming, homely and friendly feel that Warragul Community House offers when you walk in,” she said.

“It is a well-supported environment.”

Heather also enjoys that no two days are ever quite the same and finds it especially rewarding seeing the positive impact the sessions have on the people attending them.

When asked what she would say to someone thinking about volunteering, Heather’s response reflected the experience she has found at the House.

“It is a great place to volunteer, friendly, supportive and very rewarding.”

Something people may be surprised to learn about Heather is that she and her husband have spent the last 20 years restoring a 100 year old home, with the dream of one day having it heritage listed. 🏡

Thank you, Heather, for the care, patience and knowledge you share so generously with our community. Volunteers like you help create opportunities for people to build confidence, develop new skills and feel connected.
