Even with fluoridation, tooth decay is the most common global disease where many episodes of acid demineralization exceed remineralisation, affecting almost everyone, increasing with age to involve 24.3 teeth in a lifetime, mostly where food is trapped and brushing can't reach. Measured as decayed, missing and filled teeth, mostly for children, caries incidence is the global indicator of oral health but fails to show that 80% of cavities occur deep inside pit and fissure developmental faults in back teeth, or that dentists prevent these cavities by placing costly sealants over chewing surfaces to block food being trapped. This indicates that any sealant technology that blocks food being trapped, prevents far more decay than brushing and should be a major part of oral health promotion and STEM education in schools.
The lack of adequate oral health data for all age groups and real time access, results in poor policy and tooth care advice and the need to spend more on treatment. In 2013-14, there were 63,910 preventable hospitalisations of children under the age of 9 for dental treatment and in 2014/15 the cost to the Child Dental Benefits Scheme was $20.5 million for tooth extractions and $96.1 million for fillings.
Whole of population data is only available in dental records of each patient but not in a standardized format needed to populate a national database, which has prompted the pilot dental planner project that compares postcode, state and national data for all age groups, like on supertooth.org.au
3D X-ray tomography measurement of these faults in molar teeth at La Trobe university were less 0.15mm wide, which helped make glass models of a fissure that replicate how chewing forces the first bite of a meal or snack inside these faults blocking access for more food much the same as sealants from the dentist but so simple everyone can do it even little children.
