What keeps us excited each day at Outer East Foodshare - we never know what to expect! Today was another day of surprises. A huge bone for an agency asking for soup bones, a refill of our pasta supplies thanks to Coles Knox City and lots of bottled water, plus a wonderful supply of fruit, veg, bakery and mince (thanks Costco Wholesale Australia). All going to local food agencies for local people.

It's your choice when you volunteer as a driver for Outer East Foodshare! What better role than getting out and about to our donors, playing your favourite tunes and having a chat with one of our other volunteers while you're on the road?

We are in need of more volunteer drivers - without them the food goes nowhere! Shifts are mostly in the mornings for a few hours, standard drivers license required. Some lifting is involved.

Throw back to our pantry on our official opening day in October 2023, and then what you find on our shelves today! All here, safely stored for collection by our food relief partners where it will make its way onto pantry shelves in homes across Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges.

𝗣𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻!

The meerkat diet consists mainly of insects, such as beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers and termites. But, if the opportunity presents, they'll dine on small rodents (like mice) or eggs stolen from a bird's nest.

This means that Max here is always on the lookout for a worthy pursuit, and today he's noticed Outer East Foodshare. He's amazed that every week 9 tonnes of food passes through their Hub, and into the homes of people who otherwise might go without.

𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁

It was a full house last night as our dedicated team of volunteers came together for a pizza night! It was great to see people who do different shifts getting to meet one another with the room full of chatter and buzz. One of our talented volunteers doubles as a magician and even put on a special entertainment act to warm up the crowd!

As always, a special thank you to our volunteers - you are an incredible team who work hard and make a very real difference to people in our community who are doing it tough. 🧡💚

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱?

Bring it to Outer East Foodshare! We'll make sure your extra fruit goes to people in our community who can use it. We're also grateful for other home grown donations when you have an abundance... so keep us in mind for your vegetables and herbs too!

Donations can be dropped off to our Hub (51 Templeton Street, Wantirna), Monday - Friday between 9.30am and 12.30pm.

𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚 𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙪𝙨.

We are often asked why food would be donated to us instead of sold to customers. Usually, the reasons are purely cosmetic - especially for food and vegetables. Produce declared the wrong size or shape or colour won't make it to the supermarket shelf.

If something is nearing it's best before date, retailers will replace it with fresher produce even if what's on the shelf is still safe for consumption.

We also receive donations of items that are not selling well, where there is an oversupply, or where packaging might be damaged... and we're happy to redistribute these with the help of our partner agencies. Less waste, less empty tummies... it's a win-win.

𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Winter is here and the cold nights have set in. Imagine the physical and mental toll of facing winter and not knowing when you will eat or how much you'll have.

That's a reality for too many people in our Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges communities. OEF volunteers are working hard to collect food daily and get it out to our partners quickly. Here is Marilyn from OEF handing over a deliver to Alan from ADRA to support around 50 families.

We are proud to support ADRA in Wantirna, Ferntree Gully, Boronia and Warburton. When we save them time sourcing food, they can spend more time helping people and providing wrap around support.

Here's to working together to provide vulnerable people with access to food and other supports - thank you ADRA in Victoria!
