Can you give a little of your time on Sunday 14 June to join other residents so as to care for the Wamboin Hall’s trees and plants?

Hi everyone.

We are improving the Wamboin Hall surrounds on Sunday the 14th of June from 9 am to about 11 am. We will be moving mulch, chain sawing and pruning with some whipper-snipping around the edge of the oval and under the trees. Please bring what you can of the following: a trailer, wheel barrow, mulching fork, rake, chain saw, pruning implements, mattock and whipper-snipper and of course, the appropriate safety gear. The plan is to improve visibility around the entrance, remove dead trees and weeds, clean up the rubbish around the bins and mulch under the large gum tree near the hall. We may do some new planting if we have time.

Morning tea will be provided at 11 am to finish the day on a social note and give you some reward for your labour!

Please let me know if you can come and what tools/machinery you will bring so I have an idea of numbers.

Thanks very much. – Vicki Still, 0404 013 898 or [email protected]

Proposed Wamboin Oral History Project: an invitation
Are you interested in our local history?
Would you like to record oral history interviews with some of the earliest residents of Wamboin?

At the suggestion of a local resident, the Wamboin Community Association is exploring a project to collect and preserve the experiences and reflections of some of the area’s earliest residents, including people who were born here during Wamboin’s first decade. The first post-subdivision residents moved into the area and built their homes here just over 50 years ago.

In 1997, Ned Noel (The Whisper’s current editor) undertook a series of oral history interviews that yielded valuable insights into the history of the district prior to closer settlement (see The Whisper, March, June and September 1997). Nearly 30 years later, it is timely to gather further recollections, building on Ned’s work and focusing on the post-subdivision era.

The project may particularly suit a university history student or senior secondary history student, though anyone with an interest in local history may wish to participate. The WCA may provide a modest honorarium for the person undertaking the role of oral historian.

If you are unfamiliar with oral history research, an overview can be found here:

Expressions of interest are invited. Please email: [email protected]

If you would like to discuss the project before deciding whether to submit an expression of interest, please contact David McDonald on 0416 231 890.

Oral History Australia (OHA) is committed to promoting best practice in oral history research to protect the interests of both interviewers and and interviewees and help ensure the longevity and usefulness of oral history interviews. Some months ago the Wamboin Community Association (WCA) wrote to Council requesting that signs be erected identifying where Yass River crosses Norton Road, Wamboin, especially considering that the location is so close to the source of the river.
We are pleased to see that the signs have now been installed.
Many thanks from the WCA to the Council staff responsible for these works.

At Council's meeting Wed 25 February, members will consider a document 'Waste Facility Service Levels', see agendum 8.7. Staff are proposing, among other things, that the Rural Recycling Centre sites to be 'progressively decommissioned'. That would include the facility at the Wamboin Community Centre, Bingley Way.
The paper does not explicitly state what the alternative will be, but it seems to be us using the Macs Reef and Bungedore waste transfer stations.
The proposal to remove the Wamboin recycling facility is a direct result of the long-term abuse of the existing service: much of what is deposited in the bins is garbage and other non-recyclables. When this happens, which is most of the time, the whole truckload is treated as waste.
