Today DEG's Loretta Weatherall, Zoe Sands and Thomas Sullivan with long-term Yuwaya Ngarrali partner Peta MacGillivray spoke about Walgett's Youth Wellbeing Service at the Justice Reform Initiative's Reintegration Puzzle conference 2026 in Adelaide. "A community-led evidence-based approach to youth justice".

It is great to meet, share and learn with similar orgs from around the country. Also great that our sister org in ACHAA, Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge centre were there so we could catch up.

Walgett Water Quality Results 5 June 2026

‼️There is a Red Alert for blue green algae in the Ngamaay River which means toxic ‼️ and Amber Alert for the Baawan river at Walgett.

The dominant toxic species in the Ngamaay at Walgett: Dolichospermum circinale according to Water NSW https://www.waternsw.com.au/water-services/water-quality/algae-alerts

The pH readings are all in the healthy range. This means that the water is not too acidic and not too alkaline. The salinity is also within the healthy range, this is good for freshwater aquatic life.
The dissolved oxygen is on the higher end at majority of the sites in both rivers. This does not mean that it is dangerous - it may be a good for the fish.

The temperature is outside the healthy range. This is to be expected as we now go into the cooler months.

Water Quality Monitoring Walgett 20 May 2026

The pH was within the healthy range for both rivers which means that the water was not too acidic or too alkaline. The salinity was also within the healthy range in both rivers. This was good for freshwater aquatic life.
The temperature was outside the healthy range in both rivers, but this was not a huge concern as we are now getting into the cooler months therefore the water in the rivers will be getting cooler as well.
At the Walgett Wier at the 4m reading the dissolved oxygen reading was dangerously low. Below 3 (mg/l) is when fish kills happen, this is our only concerning site for dissolved oxygen for this week's reading.
Note that this week Water NSW issued an Amber Alert for blue green algae in both the Ngamaay and Baawan Rivers at Walgett. This means the water was potentially toxic.
