Congratulations to our Winemaker of the Year Belinda van Eyssen and Viticulturist of the Year Nigel van der Zande.

Belinda makes wine for the small family vineyard The Cutting, which was founded in 2018 by Belinda and her partner Daniel McDonald. She produces distinctive award-winning wines from varieties including Shiraz, Grenache, Cinsault and Chenin Blanc, with a focus on freshness and vibrancy that showcase the diversity of the Barossa. Belinda is an active member of the wine community, generously sharing her time and knowledge.

Nigel has been working for Kaesler Wines in the Barossa for 25 years. His focus has been to use regenerative farming practices to rebuild and restore the natural biodiversity while enhancing the quality of the fruit being produced. He has now taken this one step further with the introduction of rewilding techniques to return missing fauna links, combining his two passions for farming and the natural world.

Glory to Barossa!

Are you joining us on Sunday?

The annual Declaration of Vintage is a celebration of the vintage ahead and is a time for honouring the Winemaker of the Year and Viticulturist of the Year.

Welcome to our four new Barons, Amanda Mader, Darren Davis, Marie Clay and Ellie Neindorf Agnew. All four were chosen by their peers in recognition of their considerable contributions to the Barossa.

“We are thrilled to honour these 4 new Barons, who have all contributed so much to the region. Their depth of passion for the Barossa across a range of roles - viticulture, winemaking, hospitality, food, agribusiness – brings a breath of fresh air to the Barons. Each have a deep love for Barossa and a strong commitment to its future.” Louisa Rose, Grand Master of Barons of Barossa.

With a deep understanding of vine health and structure, Amanda Mader is the Vine Scout, and is often found dissecting buds, advising on pruning or helping growers breathe new life into old vines. A former Barossa Viticulturist of the Year, she has patented an Australian-first ag tech device for measuring bunch weight in real time and is dedicated to help shape the future of Barossa viticulture.

Darren Davis has had a lifelong passion for the Barossa. In 2008 he opened Bar Barossa, making it the home away from home for Barossa winemakers. He continued the theme with his Barossa in Boardshorts event series and his legendary Barossa Long Lunches. He is a true champion of our region.

A move to the Barossa to work for Wolf Blass in 2006 truly shaped Marie Clay’s winemaking path and today she is honoured to craft the storied Leo Buring Rieslings, with a winemaking philosophy to express the beauty of the vineyard and not leave her ‘fingerprints’ on the wines. An active contributor to the wine community, Len Evans scholar, wine show judge and was named Barossa Winemaker of the Year in 2024.

Ellie Neindorf Agnew brings a fresh, thoughtful energy to the region’s food, wine and agritourism landscape. She has worked across the region’s food and wine scene with some of the Barossa’s most recognizable producers, was a graduate of the Barossa Young Ambassador program in 2017 and continued to work for the program for many years. In 2024, Ellie and her partner Owen Agnew became custodians of Gully Gardens in Angaston, making a deep commitment to preserve this 120-year-old heritage orchard and traditional mixed farm.

Glory to Barossa!

At each year's Declaration of Vintage the Barons proudly lay a plaque in the walkway to honour a Baron who is sadly no longer with us.

This year we honoured the inimitable Doug Lehmann, with his daughter Annika accepting on behalf of the Lehmann family.

"Doug was winemaker and manager at Basedow Wines for 14 years before being appoint managing director of Peter Lehmann Wines. Doug always said it was people that make great wines, which epitomised his love for the Barossa community. He was active in many wine industry promotions and in community events including the Barossa Vintage Festival.

A long-time supporter of the Variety Bash, his big-hearted efforts raised almost $500,000 and inspired many. After 20 years in the SA Variety Bash, he took on the voluntary role of Chair, literally spending a thousand hours each year to create successful Bash events. Doug Lehmann was a proud Baron of Barossa."

Glory to Barossa.

The Barons of Barossa are proud to announce Peter Kelly as the 2025 Barossa Winemaker of the Year and Kym Kalleske as the Viticulturist of the Year.

Peter Kelly has been immersed in Barossa winemaking since 2006, working at several iconic wineries, and is now chief winemaker at Thorn Clarke in Eden Valley. Well respected on the Australian wine show circuit, Peter has judged at more than 40 Shows including as Panel Chair and Chair of Judges.

Kym Kalleske is a 7th generation custodian of the Kalleske Wines family property in Moppa on the Barossa’s Western ridge, which was first established in 1853. Throughout his 35 vintages, Kym has worked alongside his parents John and Lorraine. Quietly steadfast in his belief that organic and biodynamic farming are integral to the future of his family, he says there is no greater responsibility than nurturing our soil and everything which comes from it.

Announced at the annual Declaration of Vintage on Sunday the 16th of February. Louisa Rose, the Barons Grand Master, said, “The Barossa winemaking and grape growing community submit nominations for these awards. All the nominations we received this year were thoughtful and varied and although all were deserving, just one winemaker and one viticulturist could be chosen for 2025."

Congratulations to both Peter and Kim, Glory to the Barossa.
