Pheonix Arizona is even more car dependent than Perth is. In the right environments, car free living is definitely possible even in hugely car dependent cities.
It’s time our government built the Knowledge Arc* and the Ringrail**

Our cycleways are improving, especially longer distances with electric assist.

The sprawling metropolis of Phoenix seems an unlikely place to build an apartment complex without parking for residents. Car dependency is just part of life for most people there. But a new development in the suburb of Tempe is providing a blueprint for car-free and more environmentally friendly liv...

Pocket Forests - the Miyazaki method offers a viable way to (re)build our tree canopies in our cities, towns and gardens.

These pocket forests are grown using the Miyawaki method, created by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s, and their rapid maturation could be the solution to Perth's shadeless suburbs.

Every bit of Green Space and Tree Canopy counts. However, it’s loss of tree on private land that’s costing us , therefore we desperately need tree preservation laws to protect trees on private land, to force developers to design around them. It’s easy to do.

Originally developed by Japanese ecologist Akira Miyawaki in the early 1970s for Nippon Steel, Miyawaki forests have been adopted around the world to help offset rising heat in the suburbs.

For our cities to be sustainable, we need walkability and safety in our public realms. For half our population, much of that realm can be unsafe. We need to fix that, starting with listening to women and how they experience place…

Women are most likely to feel unsafe in their cities or towns, but planning authorities have rarely listened to them. Here’s what we can do to change that.

Closing the loops on materials. It’s not so much that we have a ‘waste’ problem, what we have are design problems, and architects are well placed by their broad education and experience to help solve these with creativity and intelligence.

To understand what’s been happening in our world since the mid to late 1970s, with neoliberalism, the concentration of wealth, the impoverishment of working people leading to industrial collapse and a housing crisis in developed countries, especially the anglophone ones like USA, UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa… Chomsky lays out 10 things that have been happening.
The wealthy rule our planet. The kleptocratic corporatocracy sits above all governments nowadays. They hold the money strings. Old Party politics has become puppetry through election funding and revolving doors.
As Martin Luther King asked: Why are there 40 million impoverished people in America? As we might well ask: why is there a housing crisis in Australia? And why do so many corporations pay no tax? How Com capital can move countries in a heartbeat but humans can’t?

Are we living in democracies? Or has something shifted?

Please watch and share and discuss. These issues effect us all.

A discourse with Noam Chomsky, one of the most important intellectuals alive, on the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few.

15 minute cities are humane, walkable, cyclable, have accessible green … everyone ought be able to live that way, not just the wealthy.

The concept of a 15 minute city - where neighbourhoods provide life's essentials in 15 minutes by foot or bike is almost as old as urban planning itself. But recently, this idea has become a flash point for conspiracy theorists. So, while new developments are built at pace to keep up with Australia'...
