The recently released Native Title and Aboriginal and Cultural Heritage Processes Review, has provided a litmus test for the government - just whose interests are being protected under the current West Australian cultural heritage system? Dr Anna Fagan, consultant archaeologist and anthropologist for Karri Karrak, has authored an article about the Review and the powers seeking to disrupt β€˜one of the last remaining parts of the approval machine that Aboriginal authority and independent scrutiny can interrogate’.

There is a familiar narrative in the way Aboriginal heritage is discussed in Western Australia. It's a decades-old plot concerning 'heritage rorts', 'price gouging'[1], and delay and inefficiency in se...

Our Coordinator Country and Culture, Gwen Gray and Ranger, Lyle Corpus, recently attended the 2026 AIATSIS conference in the Gold Coast presenting on β€˜Balancing Cultural and Western Knowledge Pathways: Embedding Two-Way Learning’- a presentation based on lessons learned while implementing the Corporation’s first Junior Ranger Program.

Lyle had this to share:

β€˜What an incredible week on the Gold Coast at the 2026 AIATSIS Summit. It was a real privilege to take the stage alongside Heritage Coordinator Gwen Gray to present on two-way learning in a Western, cultural heritage and ranger environment. Sharing our experiences and the importance of working together through both cultural knowledge and contemporary practices was something I’m truly proud to be part of.

More importantly, the week was about connection, learning and collaboration. It was inspiring to see so many people come together to share knowledge, listen to different perspectives, strengthen relationships and continue important conversations around Country, culture and community.

The insights, networking and genuine collaboration throughout the summit have been invaluable, and it’s exciting to see the passion and commitment from everyone involved to keep this work moving forward and create positive outcomes for future generations.
A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to connect, share stories and contribute to such a meaningful experience. Looking forward to continuing these conversations and building even stronger partnerships into the future.’

TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS CARRYING THE COST OF OFFSHORE WIND: TWO YEARS DEFENDING SEA COUNTRY

Karri Karrak Aboriginal Corporation’s advocacy with regards to offshore wind has been ongoing for over two years now.

This work has included engaging technical expertise and legal counsel at the Corporation's own expense. In practical terms, this means that Traditional Custodians and members have had to carry the cost of trying to secure proper consultation, decision-making authority, information and protection for Boodja and Wardan.

MEDIA STATEMENT: KARRI KARRAK CALLS ON THE COMMUNITY TO OBJECT TO PROPOSED YALLINGUP SAND MINE

Karri Karrak Aboriginal Corporation is calling on the public to object to the proposed extractive industry at Lot 4, 2774 Caves Road, Yallingup, currently before the City of Busselton - Local Government and the Regional Development Assessment Panel.

The proposal seeks approval for a large sand extraction operation in the south-western portion of the property. It would involve the extraction of approximately 453,000 cubic metres of sand from a 9.14 hectare area, in five stages, to a depth of approximately 70 metres AHD. The application also includes mobile screening, internal haul roads, turbine-scale truck movements, water use for dust suppression, drainage controls, construction and staged rehabilitation.

This is not a minor or low-impact proposal. It would involve extensive clearing, stripping, excavation and reshaping of a sand landform in one of the South West's most culturally and environmentally sensitive landscapes.
