Uralla Shire entrance signage project:

After securing funding through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Community Fund, the Rotary Club of Uralla has been working with communities across the Uralla area, local graphic artist Nikki Farthing, local Aboriginal Elders, the Bundarra Lions Club and Council to come up with new entrance and boundary signage for towns and villages within the Uralla Shire.

Following feedback from our surveys conducted in late 2024, we’re now pleased to provide to you the final designs. The colours chosen, horizontal style and echidna design reflect what was most popular amongst the community. “Traditional Home of the Anaiwan People” was voted favourably with “Thunderbolt Country” also receiving a lot of support. Additionally, we have reduced the clutter on the signs in response to many requests.

We’d like to give a special acknowledgement to artist Russell Meehan, Aunty Pam’s son, who designed the echidna and kangaroo graphics that are featured within the final designs.

The project aims to recognise Traditional Owners and boost the wellbeing of communities in regional areas by providing new entrance signage infrastructure that has strong local support, provides a sense of place and positive social outcomes. Our objective has also been to develop a consistent design amongst the entrance and shire boundary signage and create a visible unity throughout the Uralla Shire.

After going through the processes for obtaining quotes and discussions around installation requirements with council, we are now ready to proceed with manufacturing. Each sign will include the name of the town or village and recognise the Traditional Owners, the Anaiwan people.

Through the consultation and surveys, it has come to light that there also needs to be recognition of the Aboriginal groups who traversed across the land known as the Uralla Shire. These are the Kamillaroi, Banbai, Ngarrabul and Dunghutti people. Uncle Greg Livermore explained that this is the best information we have at this time and if/when different information becomes available then the signs can be adjusted when they are required to be upgraded in a numbers of years time. These are ‘living’ signs not static, just like the country they will stand on, they can and will change over time.
These can also be seen on our website:

Rotary Epic Day of Service held on 16 May 2026 is a global initiative that unites Rotarians and volunteers to tackle impactful community projects. The Rotary Club of Uralla decided to use this opportunity to highlight the work we do - the Club was chartered in 1956 and we have been serving our community for 70 years.

Our current major focus is the Uralla Shire towns and villages entrance signage project, recognising traditional owners. We have been consulting with Elders and the community right across the Council area. The Bundarra entrance signs are a combined project with the Lions Club. All the final designs are being created by our graphic designer and we are working with Council on the installation.

The Rotary Club of Uralla coordinates some major events such as; The Art Show, Antiques & Collectables Fair and Thunderbolts Festival, also auspices the Bundarra Garden Festival and Uralla Fairy Festival.

We run BBQ’s at a number of events including:
• The monthly Chook Auction
• Ram sales, other poultry shows and tennis days
• Australia Day
• Anzac Day
• Uralla Arts, Winter Solstice
• Christmas Fair

We support our local school’s presentations with awards and cash prizes, and Rotary Youth projects including; RYPEN, RYAG Sheep & RYMarine.

Members assist on the entry gate of the Uralla Show and Bundarra Show, provide financial support to the Uralla Neighbourhood Centre Food Pantry (at the RSL Hall) and ensure the Rotary Park is kept in good order.

Internationally the club regularly sponsors Shelter Box https://shelterboxaustralia.org.au providing temporary self-contained emergency accommodation in disaster zones, and we have participated in overseas projects.
