There’s something about an early Land Rover that refuses to go out of fashion.

Perhaps it’s their simplicity, agricultural engineering, or that these wonderful old machines were built to go almost anywhere, without needing to impress anyone.

Have you ever paused to think about why we become so obsessed with classic cars and vintage motorcycles?

Perhaps it starts when we’re young, with a Matchbox car in our pocket, a model on the shelf, or watching a particular car or bike drive past and thinking, one day …

Then comes our first car or motorcycle. Not the fastest or most beautiful, but ours. It represents freedom, independence, and the beginning of a new journey. For some, it’s the engineering, or the sound of an engine, the feel of a gearbox, the smell of leather, and the fascination with how things work.

For others, it’s design. The curves, the details, the craftsmanship and the way certain cars and bikes capture the spirit of an era. And, then there’s the emotion as a classic car or vintage motorcycle can take us somewhere that has nothing to do with getting from A to B. It connects us with memories, people, places and a simpler sense of freedom.

But perhaps the greatest thing about being a car enthusiast is the community. Because ultimately, we don’t just collect cars and bikes. We collect memories, stories, friendships, and moments. And, maybe that’s why the fascination never really goes away.

The legendary BMW 635 CSi, otherwise known as the ‘Shark Nose’ is a car that didn’t follow convention. It challenged it.

With its distinctive wedge-shaped design, aerodynamic thinking, superb engineering and unmistakable presence, the 635 CSi captured something special about BMW: innovation without sacrificing character.

And that is exactly the spirit of Uraidla Heritage. In a world of constant change, digitisation and sameness, we believe there is enormous value in celebrating the things that were built with imagination, craftsmanship and purpose.

This is WHP 205J, one of the very earliest V12 Jaguar E-types, while the aircraft behind it is the first British SEPECAT Jaguar fighter, XW560.

Jaguar used this car for a publicity photoshoot on an airfield, pairing its newest and most glamorous road car with Britain’s newest Jaguar-named combat aircraft.

The Jaguar driver was Tony Bell, who was an apprentice at Jaguar at the time. He later recalled that he was simply told to take the E-type to the airfield and follow instructions. After several passes, he asked the RAF pilot how close he could get the aircraft to the roof of the E-type. The pilot’s response? “How thick is the paint?”

It’s encouraging that more younger enthusiasts are joining the classic motoring community. With fresh ideas, they are learning mechanical skills, documenting road trips and restorations on social media and proving that classic cars are as much about experiences as preservation.

As the automotive world moves towards electrification and autonomy, classic cars offer something increasingly important, a hands-on, analogue connection with engineering, craftsmanship and history.
