On Wednesday 10th June, the Upwey Township Flag will fly at half-mast in remembrance of Neale Daniher AO, former AFL player and coach, Victorian of the Year and Australian of the Year.

In 2013, Neale was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), or ‘The Beast’ as he called it.

Determined to help others living with the disease, Neale co-founded Fight MND. Together with his family and supporters, has committed over $141 million (and counting) to medical research and care, to improve the lives of those living with MND, and to find treatments and ultimately a cure.

Neale was named Victorian of the Year in 2019 and Australian of the Year in 2025 in recognition of his extraordinary contributions leading the fight against MND and inspiring millions of Australians with hope.

In 2025 during his acceptance speech, Neale said "To everyone who has bought a beanie, donated a dollar, or spread the word — thank you. You are proof that when Australians unite, nothing is impossible."
