Accoras recently welcomed Down Syndrome & Intellectual Disability Queensland to its Upper Mt Gravatt site, where Claire met with the Child, Youth and Families teams.

The visit provided an opportunity to share information about DSIDQ’s services, programs and statewide supports for families, while also showcasing the breadth of work delivered by Accoras across the community.
The conversation reflected a strong alignment in values and a shared commitment to practical, family-centred support.

Discussions explored opportunities for future collaboration, including participation in MyTime webinars and Carer events. Bringing organisations together in this way strengthens referral pathways, deepens understanding across services and enhances the coordinated support available to parents, carers, children and young people.

Thank you, Claire, for the time, openness and generosity extended during the visit. We look forward to building on this connection in ways that deliver tangible benefits for families across Queensland.

In just three months, Accoras Collaborative Aftercare Program (ACAP) is already showing the difference that steady, relationship-based support can make for young people.

Recently, a young person (Rebecca*) was referred to ACAP following two su***de attempts. She was navigating profound grief after surviving a car accident that claimed the life of a family member, alongside ongoing health complications and the complex emotions that come with survival. Over time, Rebecca had begun withdrawing from those around her and was using non-suicidal self-injury as a way of coping.

Through consistent, gentle support, Rebecca’s psychosocial case worker walked alongside her at her pace. Trust was built slowly, without pressure, creating a space where Rebecca felt safe to engage. Together with her family, they focused on meaningful goals, strengthened connections to longer-term supports, and developed practical strategies for times when triggers arise.

Recently, Rebecca shared that she has not self-harmed for some time. She has begun thinking about her future again and has started talking about learning to drive one day.

Her mum shared that it was the first time they had heard Rebecca laugh in their home in two years.

Stories like this remind us that recovery does not happen alone. Ongoing, compassionate, community-based support after a suicidal crisis can change the trajectory of a young person’s life and bring hope back into families.

At Accoras, much of our work happens quietly, but its impact can be life changing.

Amina is a single mother facing significant language and literacy barriers, ongoing health challenges, and financial hardship. Everyday tasks such as managing childcare, government accounts and written correspondence caused constant anxiety.

Through our Secondary to Intensive Family Support (SIFS) program, a Family Support Practitioner began working alongside Amina when she was facing a childcare debt of more than $2,500 and the real risk of her son losing his childcare place. The debt felt unmanageable and the fear of disruption to her son’s routine weighed heavily on her wellbeing.

Her Family Support Practitioner advocated with the childcare provider, arranged interpreter support, and ensured Amina was fully understood. The debt was waived in full, removing a significant financial burden and immediate source of stress.

When the childcare service later changed management and new barriers arose, support continued. Her practitioner helped restore access to essential systems, rebuilt communication with the new provider, and remained a consistent point of contact during a period of uncertainty.

Today, Amina’s son attends childcare five days a week with full subsidy coverage. For Amina, this means relief from ongoing stress, confidence to engage with services, and the reassurance that her child’s care is secure.

This is the difference steady, culturally responsive family support can make in everyday life.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Jane Hancock as Chief Executive Officer of Accoras, commencing 2 February 2026.

Jane’s appointment follows an extensive and highly competitive recruitment process. We are confident she is the right person to lead Accoras into its next chapter.

Jane brings more than 30 years of senior health leadership experience across acute, primary and mental health settings, including executive and CEO roles within Queensland Hospital and Health Services and senior positions within the Department of Health. She is widely respected for her values-based leadership, strong delivery focus and genuine commitment to person-centred, community-based care.

We would also like to sincerely acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Kris Sargeant in her role as Interim CEO, and for the seamless handover she is now working on with Jane. Her leadership has ensured continuity, stability and a continued focus on delivering high-quality support to the communities we serve. Our commitment to our partners and communities remains unchanged. We will continue to deliver on our obligations and work collaboratively to support more people to live better lives and contribute to their communities.

We look forward to welcoming Jane to Accoras in the coming weeks.

“I can’t thank you enough for helping Sam. She is so much more confident and back to her little self, and without your support I couldn’t have done it on my own. Thank you so much."

Supporting young people and their families to build confidence and resilience is at the heart of what we do at You.nique Gold Coast, and feedback like this reminds us how powerful the right support can be.

One of our You.nique practitioners, Amy, has been finding creative ways to support a 6-year-old she's working.

Recently, Amy transformed one of the Psych Services rooms into a calm, inviting therapeutic space. She included the young person's favourite weighted dragon toy alongside other comfort items to help him feel at ease while processing some big emotions.

This thoughtful approach to the physical environment recognises that when children feel safe and comfortable, they're better able to engage in the psycho-social interventions that support their wellbeing. Amy works alongside this young person and his father, using the space she creates to build trust and facilitate meaningful therapeutic work.

Understanding what makes a young person feel safe, seen and valued forms the foundation of effective support. Our team continues to find innovative ways to meet children and families where they are.

Accoras SIFS DFV Practitioner, Caitlin, organised a community stall at Westfield Garden City today to mark Orange the World, part of the global 16 Days of Activism to end gender-based violence. The campaign calls for stronger awareness, prevention and support for women and families experiencing violence.

We were joined by several organisations who stood alongside us, helping create a visible and united message: everyone deserves safety.

Thank you to our partners and to the community members who stopped by. These conversations matter, and so does showing up together.

Yesterday, Accoras Managers Di Southey and Ben Vanderbyl attended day one of the QCOSS 2025 Conference: Changing State at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The conference brings together community sector leaders, advocates, and changemakers to explore pathways for systemic reform across Queensland. Organised around three themes - Dreaming, Daring, and Doing - the program challenged participants to envision bold futures while taking practical steps toward change.

Day one highlights included:
Dr Chris Sarra's plenary conversation with QCOSS CEO Aimee McVeigh explored the work we're being called to do and the future we're dreaming for our children. Despite setbacks since their 2022 conversation about Voice to Parliament and Treaty, Dr Sarra reminded us that our capacity to dream and bring forward systemic change remains intact.

The domestic and family violence panel featuring Rosie Batty AO, Jess Hill, and Bri Lee demonstrated the power of storytelling and truth-telling in shifting public narratives. These speakers have elevated national conversations on domestic, family and sexual violence through their unapologetic advocacy, helping Australians expect more from how we talk about and respond to violence.

Other sessions examined youth crime narratives, housing innovation, and human rights legislation, providing practical insights alongside inspirational perspectives on systemic change.

The insights gained will directly inform our management approach and strategic planning across Accoras programs.

Thank you to QCOSS for bringing the sector together for such important conversations about the Queensland we're building together.

This morning, Accoras, along with the Inala Elders, welcomed Brisbane employers and community members to the Oxley Golf Club for a wonderful morning kicking off Mob BOOST.

Eight-time world swimming champion and Olympian Brooke Hanson was our guest speaker, sharing powerful insights about the value of diversity and resilience in the workplace - core elements of what Mob BOOST aims to build.

Delivered by Accoras in partnership with the Inala Elders, Mob BOOST is an Indigenous Skills and Employment Program connecting Brisbane employers with skilled, job-ready Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We work alongside employers to create culturally safe workplaces where First Nations employees can thrive, providing ongoing support to build cultural capability and ensure sustainable employment outcomes.

Whether you're looking to fill entry-level roles, apprenticeships, or positions for experienced workers, we're here to support genuine partnerships that benefit your business and our community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, to Oxley Golf Club for hosting, to the NIAA for funding this important program, to Brooke Hanson for her inspiring keynote, and to the Inala Elders for their partnership in launching Mob BOOST.

Safety planning doesn't have to look like a clinical document.

Our ACAP psychosocial case workers know that a safety plan is only effective if a young person will actually use it. That means creating something they're comfortable carrying, sharing with trusted adults, and referring to when they need it most.

In our aftercare work, we've seen the difference creative, personalised approaches can make. When a safety plan reflects who a young person is, through colours they connect with, images that resonate, or formats that make sense to them, it becomes a tool they're more likely to engage with.

It isn't about making documents look pretty, it's about recognising that visual accessibility and personalisation can be the difference between a safety plan sitting in a drawer and one that supports a young person through a crisis.

Our teams understand that effective aftercare means meeting young people where they are, not where we think they should be.
