Stickin' it up the Smokes is the only Aboriginal maternal health tackling smoking campaign in Australia, and is particularly important as over 57% of pregnant Aboriginal women smoke, resulting in too many Aboriginal bubs being born prematurely with health complications that can affect them for the rest of their lives. rt to pregnant Aboriginal women to quit for the health and safety of their babies whilst pregnant by:
• communication between our Facebook fans, AHCSA and Aboriginal health teams
• providing a space for conversation between other women in the same position
• allowing pregnant Aboriginal women to make a public commitment to stop smoking
• encouraging support from friends and family. AHCSA staff
Mary-Anne Williams is the Maternal Health Tackling Smoking Project Officer working at AHCSA. Her role is to work with pregnant Aboriginal women and Aboriginal health teams to try and reduce smoking rates and ensure that more Aboriginal bubs are born healthy and strong. Andrea Murphy is the Aboriginal Social Marketing Officer at AHCSA. Her role is to develop marketing strategies and materials that reflect her understanding of what drives people’s lifestyle behaviours and what can assist them to make positive changes, with the aim of helping prevent chronic disease among Aboriginal people.
