Today we commemorate National Sorry Day. As we reflect on colonialism's impact on the stolen generation, the AEU stands in solidarity with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who continue to be affected by the violence of colonisation. Sorry Day acknowledges the damage of separating families and the subsequent deep harm this caused. As educators, we understand the importance of a safe childhood, and we commit to continuing to learn so that we can pave the path for reconciliation, truth-telling, and justice.

Vale Peter Buckskin, an extraordinary champion of Aboriginal education and truth-telling in curriculum. Professor Buckskin was a long-time friend of the AEU - advocating for the formation of the Aboriginal Education Directorate, working directly to secure additional support and entitlements for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators, and fighting to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids see themselves reflected in the educators and curriculum they're learning from.

Reconciliation Australia mourns the passing of Professor Peter Buckskin, a proud Narungga man from the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.

For over 40 years Professor Buckskin’s passion was the pursuit of educational excellence for Aboriginal peoples.

He contributed to significant changes within the education landscape, working tirelessly alongside First Nations education champions to ensure that First Nations peoples, histories, cultures and perspectives were embedded in Australia’s education system.

A strong supporter of the reconciliation movement, Professor Buckskin advised on – and formally launched – Reconciliation Australia’s Narragunnawali: Reconciliation in Education program in 2015.

He was a founding judge and patron of the Narragunnawali Awards.

He also served for many years as Co-Chair of Reconciliation South Australia.

Reconciliation Australia CEO, Karen Mundine said his impact on Reconciliation Australia’s work in the education sector is immeasurable.

Area Meetings are coming up!

Did you know that Area Meetings are the most direct way to guide the daily work of your union? Meetings are run by AEU Organisers in the two weeks prior to Branch Council. They provide an opportunity for members to discuss the issues affecting their site with members at other nearby sites and submit motions for Branch Council.

Travel costs are reimbursed for eligible country Area Meetings and often meals or nibbles are often provided to make the meeting more enjoyable.
