The Heritage Network The issue of former HMVS Cerberus is considered to be of utmost importance and demanding of immediate attention given the current condition of the ship.

https://www.facebook.com/theheritagenet is the Official Fb page for "The Heritage Network" (Melb, Aust) so please feel free to 'invite' your Fb friends, Like/Follow us & share any posts you find interesting whilst here. Objectives - 'The Heritage Network' is intended as a referral and educational tool to support the endeavours of existing organizations in preserving our heritage for future generations. Like minded enthusiasts are encouraged to register an interest in saving the Cerberus, or at least a significant part of it, and to assist in promoting the wider campaign to raise public awareness of the issue. The Network aims to bring members of the public together in support of this and other such endeavours. Given the significance of Cerberus to our local history and to worldwide maritime history the preservation/restoration of whatever remains viable of this unique ship is considered imperative. Some dedicated organizations have been working diligently in support of the wider campaign to 'Save the Cerberus' for many years. It is our intention to enhance this endeavour and further promote the work of these organizations to the wider community through networking with like-minded supporters dedicated to the task. At best, the existence of The Heritage Network to promote the campaign could help enthuse the public to an extent where loud and clear demands are made of our politicians and the corporate sector to provide some assistance. At worst another generation, in a small corner of suburban Melbourne, will gain some insight into an oft' neglected but nevertheless critical era of maritime history.

⛵ Help take Alma Doepel to Hobart in 2027

Alma Doepel is preparing to sail from Melbourne to Hobart for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2027.

This will be a major milestone in her return to service, and we are now seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to join the sailing crew or support the voyage as a volunteer.

You do not need maritime experience to volunteer. We will need help with voyage preparation, logistics, catering, provisioning, merchandise, fundraising, administration, communications and festival activities.

You will need to be available for crew training and inductions from October - January, and then voyage dates in February.

In less than a month, Echuca’s 111-year-old municipal water tower is going to be demolished by Coliban Water. A landmark of the town since 1914, the tower is a contributory place in the Shire of Campaspe’s Echuca Central Heritage Precinct overlay.

The tower was constructed by the Reinforced Concrete Company of Melbourne, which was founded by Australian war hero General John Monash. At the time of its completion, it was the biggest of its kind in Australia and cost the Borough £2973. It was 108 feet (33 metres) in height from ground to the top of the tank, and was borne by a splayed foundation of concrete 3 feet (91cm) in depth. The tank has a capacity of 150,000 gallons (681,900 litres). The tank stands on a solid central column of iron-reinforced concrete 3 feet in diameter and an outer wall tapering from 10 1/3 inches in thickness at the foot to 9 1/2 inches. There are five flats in the tower, each floor being composed of reinforced concrete four inches in thickness. An iron ladder reaches from floor to floor. In the construction of the tower and tank, 646 tonnes of material were used. The architect was the renowned Mr Arthur E. Castles of Deakin Shire. It took around 5 months to construct.

The Shire has been awfully quiet regarding the demolition, and with the lack of community consultation by Coliban Water, it’s left many residents wondering how this decision has been reached. The Echuca Water Tower isn’t some privately owned infrastructure. It was constructed from our grandparents’ rate money, maintained for decades with our parents' rate money, and now it’s being erased from the Echuca skyline because it no longer serves Coliban Water’s purpose.
