The leaders of the Parliamentary Friends of Cycling have joined in front of Parliament House to celebrate UN World Bicycle Day!
The group is an initiative of We Ride Australia and is chaired by Zaneta Mascarenhas MP, Hon. Andrew Wallace MP and Dr Helen Haines MP. It has vastly improved the bicycle sector’s ability to reach decision makers in federal Parliament on key issues of concern for bike riders across Australia.
Our next major event in Parliament House will be 18 Aug to celebrate the opportunities that investment in active transport infrastructure provides to all Australians. It takes on a lot more significance after last month's federal Government announcement of a major multi-year $500 million Active Transport Fund which will invest $90.2 million in just the first year to build infrastructure across the country.

Our Budget update - 22 May 2026.

The Active Transport Fund has been 'front-loaded' for maximum impact!

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King is changing the game for walking and cycling and has 'front-loaded' the $500m program to maximise its impact in the first three years.

It seems clear that the Minister is determined to have a significant impact quickly with the Active Transport Fund, which follows last year’s runaway success of the previous $100 million fund.

As Australians search for ways to beat the fuel crisis including through increased use of public and active transport, We Ride Australia continues to lead nationally on e-bike issues in the media and political lobbying.

We've been at the centre of active transport advocacy to all levels of government, nationally at e-bike inquiries, and we've been recognised for unparallelled expertise in the issues driving the flood of illegal e-bikes entering our market. This work has only escalated as the Government determines a response to the fuel crisis caused by the war in the Middle East.

So far in 2026 alone, WeRide has conducted more than 32 interviews on radio, on TV and in print media, confirming that unsafe and non-compliant e-bikes are the biggest issue to have hit our sector in decades. Read our full Message to Members here:

As we reflect on this year, WeRide would like to convey our profound feelings of sadness at the senseless act of violence at Bondi Beach on Sunday, 14 December. We stand with our Jewish friends, neighbours and all Australians in their grief and loss.

Despite this time of immense sadness, we hope we can find time to pause and reflect on the various achievements of 2025.

WeRide is proud to have:

- Secured funding through iMOVE to expand our internationally recognised RideScore program into WA schools in 2026.
- Lobbied to ensure e-bikes will be safer across the country + supporting a safe e-bikes Private Members Bill in Parliament
- Led a national Election campaign to increase federal funding for bikes
- Hosted international industry leaders to speak in Parliament and to senior Transport Department officials.
- Engaged with federal leaders including dinner with the Treasurer to discuss the value of investment in bikes
- Supported a national push for 30km/h urban speed limits by a Councils group
- Led discussions on the active transport legacy for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games
- Provided input to key national conferences and participated in the Future Transport Summit Consortium.

WeRide has had one of its biggest years ever, here is why! Go to our website news post: https://www.weride.org.au/announcement/2025-weride-wrap/

Cycling groups celebrate reinstatement of e-bike standard

In a welcome announcement celebrated by bicycle riders and the industry this afternoon, the Australian Infrastructure and Transport Ministers have announced the reinstatement of the internationally accepted standard for e-bikes.

The announcement came in the Ministerial Communique this afternoon and states,

‘Ministers agreed to work towards a regulatory framework for e-mobility devices to ensure safe and consistent supply and use of these devices in the Australian market, while still promoting mobility and innovation.’

A framework is still being developed, however in the interim, the Communique says,

‘To supplement this (new framework), and to assist importers, the Commonwealth will reinstate the EN-15194 standard and meet with relevant stakeholders to ensure the use of this standard is well understood and supported.’

We Ride Australia and Bicycle Industries Australia could not be happier that this global standard has been reinstated after it was deleted from the import framework governing e-bikes in 2021.

This announcement responds directly to the advocacy of calls from Bicycle Industries Austra, We Ride Australia and Australian bicycle organisations which has been determinant in achieving this outcome.

We look forward to continuing to assist Governments at all levels as they work to establish a robust national framework to stop unsafe product reaching Australian consumers.

BIA General Manager Peter Bourke said,
“This is a sensational outcome for the Australian bicycle industry,

“EN15194 is the leading e-bike standard around the world, and its reinstatement will address the impacts of poor-quality and unsafe imports.”

WeRide’s Stephen Hodge said,
“e-bikes are booming globally,

“They provide healthy, safe and affordable mobility for the more than half of all trips each day that are less than 5km,

“The reinstatement of EN15194 means Australians will have the confidence to know the e-bikes they buy for themselves, and their children are safe and fit for purpose.”

The news of more tragic deaths of children riding what have been described as e-bikes in Queensland in recent weeks signals it is well beyond time to seriously address this issue.

The increasing number of reports and stories clearly highlight that there are too many deaths and serious injuries, but they also highlight that safe and road legal e-bikes are not the problem.

Media statement 17 November 2025

WeRide has viewed the extensive coverage of current e-bike safety issues that aired last night on Channel 9’s ‘60 Minutes’ program, ‘Riding for a Fall’.
The report covered two tragic crashes and the trauma caused by the use of bikes imported into Australia that do not meet our safety standards and are not appropriate (or legal) for use on our streets, especially by children.
