🌳 Artist Profile: James Bradley

James Bradley’s connection with timber began early.

His grandmother was an antique dealer and restorer, and by the age of ten James had learned to recognise many different timbers used in antique furniture, from English oak and African mahogany to Indian rosewood.

That early fascination led him to train at the London College of Furniture and build a career designing and making furniture in both the UK and Australia.

Today, as a member of the North West Woodcraft Guild, James continues to celebrate timber as one of nature’s most remarkable materials.

For him, wood is something to be respected and cherished — a precious natural resource that can be transformed into beautiful and lasting objects through skill and care.

📍 James’ work is part of ‘New Life’ — an exhibition by the West Woodcraft Guild Inc. now on display in the art gallery at Hive until 3 May 2026.

🔥 Artist Profile: Jean Kuns

Sometimes the best pieces of wood are the ones that almost ended up in the fire.

Jean Kuns’ work in the ‘New Life’ exhibition began with a large collection of Tasmanian myrtle boards donated to the Guild. Some pieces were damaged or grub-eaten and trimmed off, then passed to Jean with the comment: “Jean, you have a wood heater.”

But Jean is the kind of maker who believes you can make something from nothing.
After cutting and dressing the salvaged pieces, she discovered beautiful narrow strips of sound timber perfect for laminated chopping boards. The finished pieces highlight the rich colours and striking grain patterns hidden within the reclaimed wood.

It’s a perfect example of the spirit behind the ‘New Life’ exhibition — finding beauty and purpose in timber that might otherwise be discarded.

📍 See Jean’s work in ‘New Life’ — an exhibition by the North West Woodcraft Guild Inc. now, on display in the art gallery at Hive until 3 May 2026.

♟ Artist Profile: Tim Horniblow

When Tim Horniblow set out to make a chess set, he knew it would be both a challenge and an adventure.

Using Tasmanian blackwood and Huon pine, Tim turned and carved each chess piece by hand, discovering along the way that perfection wasn’t the goal.

After many trial pieces and hours of practice, Tim realised that each piece didn’t need to be identical, only recognisable. The knights in particular proved to be a challenge, requiring patience and careful carving.

Creating the chess board involved another level of precision, working with delicate veneers and experimenting with a variety of finishes including wax, shellac, oil and beeswax.

For Tim, the North West Woodcraft Guild Inc. has provided not just new skills, but also friendships, mentors and encouragement.

📍 Tim’s work is part of ‘New Life’, now on display in the art gallery at Hive until 3 May 2026.
