ASMOF NSW - The Doctors Union We exist to improve the working life of salaried doctors working across NSW health services. Together we are stronger! Join us now!

ASMOF (NSW) is the registered Trade Union for salaried doctors in NSW. Our members include Staff Specialists, Post Graduate Fellows, Clinical Academics, Career Medical Officers, Interns, Resident Medical Officers, Registrars, Assistants in Medicine and Medical students. By becoming an ASMOF member you will join thousands of doctors in NSW, adding to our collective strength and helping us fight for quality public health services in which doctors can do their best work. Content warning: discussion of sexual assault.

Join the ASMOF NSW Women’s Working Group for an online conversation on Wednesday 4 November, 7–8pm via Microsoft Teams, with Dr Dominique Lee, Dr Liz Swinburn and Dr Elle Bain.

The discussion will explore Dr Lee’s memoir What’s Been Broken Is All The More Sharp, her experience of surviving sexual assault as a junior doctor, and what this means for culture, safety and support in medicine.

ASMOF NSW has secured a new Interim Award to help retain psychiatrists in our public hospitals. But patients are still spending days in emergency departments waiting for mental health beds, and children face months waiting to see a psychiatrist.

This is an important union win, but the mental health crisis is far from over.

The NSW Government must stop managing the headlines and start rebuilding the public psychiatry workforce.

A person in a mental health crisis should not spend ten days in an emergency department waiting for a bed. Yet that is what the Sydney Morning Herald has reported at St Vincent’s Hospital.

“When a person in a mental health crisis spends ten days in an emergency department waiting for a bed, the system has failed them. When a child cannot get in to see a psychiatrist until they are at crisis point, the system has failed them. That is happening in NSW right now.” - Dr Yvonne Nguyen, ASMOF NSW Councillor and psychiatrist

The new Interim Award is a step towards retaining public hospital psychiatrists. The NSW Government must now rebuild the workforce and invest in inpatient and community mental health care, so people can get help before a crisis and access a bed when they need one.

We've continued to push back against NSW Health's draft Secondary Employment Policy.

The Doctors Union President, Dr Nicholas Spooner, told The Medical Republic the proposed policy would give NSW Health extraordinary powers over doctors’ lawful professional activities outside rostered hours.

He said NSW Health should instead address the real drivers of fatigue, including unsafe rostering, excessive hours, unrostered overtime, on-call demands and chronic understaffing.

We've called for the draft policy to be withdrawn and for NSW Health to address these workforce pressures.

Healthscope Operations Pty Ltd’s Receivers have entered into agreements for the proposed sale of the majority of Healthscope’s remaining hospitals.

The agreements are targeted for completion on 30 November 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. If the sale proceeds, six NSW hospitals will be acquired by Calvary Health Care and three will be acquired by Acurio Health.

Healthscope has advised The Doctors’ Union that its hospitals will continue to operate as normal while the sale process progresses, with no immediate changes to services or day-to-day operations, and that patient care remains its number one priority.

We want to ensure that members’ work health and safety, job security and continuity of entitlements are protected throughout any transfer of ownership.

43.2% of Category 2 patients - the second-highest emergency category - were not treated within 10 minutes.

Timely emergency care requires enough staff and capacity to move patients through the hospital. The NSW Minns Government is failing its own benchmarks.

We are calling on the Minns Government to properly fund a workforce plan that supports the people of NSW. NSW deserves better.

Independent monitoring shows the NSW Minns Government is failing to meet its own health target, with 2 in 3 patients admitted or transferred remaining in emergency after six hours.

Failing to provide adequate funding and staffing is not just failing a KPI. It's failing patients and the medical staff who provide their care.

We are calling on the Minns Government to step up and explain how and when it will rectify these failures. NSW deserves better.
