Arbitration is over. Our campaign isn't. This historic case was built by doctors across NSW, with:
đź“„ 28,000 pages of evidence
🗣️ 147 witness statements
⚖️ 30+ hearing days

Now we await the Commission's decision. But winning lasting change takes more than one case. It takes organising, advocacy, political pressure and member action.

Thank you to every member who contributed, campaigned, gave evidence or shared their story.

What's next? We're holding member focus groups to hear directly from doctors across NSW and help set the priorities for the next phase of our campaign.

Wollongong Hospital specialist and ASMOF NSW delegate Dr Harsha Ananthram has spoken about the reality facing doctors across the state: guilt, fear, sleep deprivation and mounting pressure to keep an overstretched system running.

The problem goes far beyond pay. Doctors are leaving NSW, burnout is rising, and unsafe workloads are putting patient care at risk.

NSW needs modern awards, safe staffing levels and working conditions that help retain the doctors our public hospitals depend on.

ASMOF members outside the IRC this morning, standing together with a clear message: listen to doctors and protect patient care in NSW. We need an Award that recognises doctors’ work, tackles fatigue, improves retention, and delivers safe staffing levels.

Dr Behny Samadi and Dr Stephen Korbel speaking outside the IRC this morning as closing submissions begin in our historic Award Reform case.

After 30 days of hearings, the evidence is clear: outdated Awards are driving fatigue, unpaid labour and workforce shortages. Doctors deserve safe hours, fair pay and real reform.

After 30 days in the IRC, the evidence is clear: outdated Awards are driving fatigue, burnout and workforce shortages - putting patient care at risk.

Doctors deserve safe hours, fair pay and conditions that reflect the reality of modern medicine.

ASMOF NSW is calling for Awards that properly recognise doctors’ work, tackle fatigue, improve retention and deliver safe staffing for the public hospital system patients rely on.

Junior doctors at Nepean Hospital received a memo implying they may not be suited to medicine if they are struggling with unsafe rosters and fatigue.

This is the reality for many doctors in NSW public hospitals: excessive hours, chronic understaffing, burnout, and a workplace culture that too often blames frontline staff instead of fixing the system.

Doctors are not failing the system. The system is failing doctors - and that puts patient care at risk.

ASMOF NSW will continue to fight for safe working hours, proper staffing, and respectful treatment of doctors across NSW public hospitals.

Doctors are being told that 17-hour shifts, back-to-back weeks and burnout are “absolutely standard in health”.

This is not normal. It is unsafe. And blaming exhausted doctors for fatigue caused by chronic understaffing is disgraceful.

Doctors deserve safe hours, respectful workplaces, and a health system that values their wellbeing as much as patient care. NSW Health needs to do far more than issue an apology - it must address the unsafe workloads and culture driving doctors to breaking point.

21/05/2026

Our Junior Vice President, Dr Tom Morrison, spoke on the radio this morning about the reality facing NSW public hospital doctors: excessive hours, unsafe fatigue, and a system pushing doctors to breaking point.

One in three NSW public hospital doctors are ready to walk over excessive hours. The government cannot keep ignoring this crisis.

Tonight’s Federal Budget announcement failed to address the workforce crisis facing public hospitals, while NDIS changes risk pushing more vulnerable people into overcrowded emergency departments.

Without stronger community supports and more doctors, pressure on hospitals and frontline staff will continue to worsen.

ASMOF NSW will continue fighting for safe staffing, competitive remuneration, and conditions that retain doctors in the public system.
