We have a lot of amazing posters here at Jessie Street National Women’s Library… and we mean A LOT. But this one caught our attention this week.
This poster is from the 1982 Women and Arts Festival, a month-long celebration of women’s creativity held across New South Wales. The festival brought together artists, writers, performers and filmmakers through exhibitions, performances, workshops and community events attended by hundreds of thousands of people.
At Jessie Street National Women’s Library, we hold more than just the posters. Our collection includes badges, programmes, magazines, artwork, poetry and other festival materials that help tell the story of this remarkable event.
More than forty years later, these items preserve an important moment in Australia’s cultural history and the women whose creativity, vision and activism helped make it possible.
Want to learn more? We featured the Women and Arts Festival in our most recent newsletter, where we take a closer look at its history and legacy.
