Most children start showing the first signs of imaginative (pretend) play between 18 months and 2 years old, but it develops gradually.

Roughly:

* 12–18 months: Simple imitation, like pretending to talk on a phone, stirring a spoon in a cup, or feeding a doll.
* 18–24 months: More obvious pretend play begins. They might pretend a block is a car, give teddy a drink, or act out familiar routines.
* 2–3 years: Imagination really starts to blossom. Children create simple stories, pretend to be animals, superheroes, parents, doctors, and use everyday objects in creative ways.
* 3–5 years: Pretend play becomes much more complex, with characters, storylines, rules, and role-playing with other children.

Every child develops at their own pace. Some children are naturally drawn to imaginative play early, while others prefer physical play, puzzles, building, or exploring how things work before becoming interested in pretend games.

If you’re wondering what it can help to look for things like:

* Copying everyday activities
* Pretending objects are something else
* Feeding or caring for dolls/teddies
* Acting out stories from books or TV shows
* Inventing characters or scenarios

What age did your little one start signs of imaginative play?

When parents speak, we listen - and the message is clear.

Playgroups are more than play.

Playgroups and peer support groups build confidence, connection and capability for families, while supporting children’s development from the very start.

What families tell us matters:
• Stronger parenting confidence
• Greater connection to community
• Better social and developmental outcomes for children
• Real support, early — when it counts most

This is the power of prevention and early intervention, happening every day in local communities across NSW.

Supporting families during times of need is at the core of what we do.

Our Parents Playbook features a stack of at home, in the car and in emergency shelter games to play to keep kids supported. It also looks at big emotions in little people during disasters.

We were proud to receive funding through the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) to develop resources for playgroup facilitators an families managing disasters.

Our suite of resources includes this fantastic facilitator guide to managing a disaster, alongside a parent playbook and a real life story of managing a playgroup during a disaster contributed from one of our amazing groups in Forbes in rural NSW.
