Help us find our next award winner!

Nominations are officially OPEN for the 2026 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards!

We all know an OzFisher who goes above and beyond, the person leading the charge at every workshop or assisting others learn more about our fisheries. Now is the time to give them a shout-out.

Why get involved? Last year, the OzFish Murray-Darling Basin Program took home the NSW Volunteer Team of the Year award! We know the impact our community has on waterways, and we want to keep that momentum going.

Every nominee is recognized with a certificate and an invitation to a regional ceremony and it's the perfect way to say "thanks for all you do."

OzFish have launched a citizen science dashboard where the community can report sightings of Tilapia across NSW. These reports help build a clearer picture of where tilapia are present and alert us to any new waterways they may be spreading into.

👉 If you see tilapia, log it here:

Help us identify and record sightings of two of Australia's most impactful non-native fish species throughout NSW.

At our Tilapia Buster on Sunday with Tweed Shire Council, we played an elimination game of heads (true) and tails (false) to test our knowledge on Tilapia. Local angler Jerome lasted till round 14, reigning supreme and winning a $50 BCF voucher as the prize. How well do you know Tilapia? Test your knowledge with these questions:

Do females carry the eggs in their mouths?

Is human translocation the biggest threat to Tilapia spreading in our waterways?

Are Tilapia in the top 100 pest species in the world?

How many did you get right? Share your score below and let’s keep sharing the word about how this pest species is bad for our waterways.

A huge thank you to the 40 participants who came to our Tilapia Buster event yesterday, evening braving the morning storm! It was an awesome day filled with community spirit and important conversations about why tilapia pose such a threat to our waterways and native fish species.🐟

Congratulations to local angler Ricky, who caught the winning Tilapia measuring 44cm! Thankyou to Tweed Shire Council for partnering with us to make this year’s annual Tilapia Buster a success.

Thanks to all the volunteers, Tweed Shire Council and Tweed Landcare for a successful planting at Burringbar creek on Sunday. We had just over 15 sets of hands, helping to build on the current riparian zone planting and help create more habitat for our fish! 🌱
