The Fire and Emergency Services 2026 State Conference was held yesterday in Hobart and 3 members from Tunnack Volunteer Fire Brigade attended. This full day of information sharing, including key note speaker Carlene York APM, displays, stalls and networking was very insightful. Our members viewed the mobile Fire detection trailers used to spot smoke, learned about the new Fire Danger Ratings (and how much information you can find on the TFS website about this for your area - more on that later!). We saw some amazing older Appliances and the Sea Rescue boat amongst other displays. This year also celebrated SES Tasmania's 50th birthday - and yes there was a huge cake.
Many thanks must go to the organising committee for this great event. Certainly a lot of work goes into it and we appreciate it very much.

All Emergency Service Volunteers in Tasmania are required to do regular training and Tunnack Brigade Members are no exception. Our members are fully trained in first aid and four members have additional training allowing us to use oxygen and other advanced first aid equipment. Our 4.1 CAFS & 5.1 appliances are both fully equipped with excellent first aid kits and De Fib's and our 4.1 CAFS appliance also has Oxygen - meaning you can be assured that we will be able to look after you if ever needed.
Living rurally as we do, sometimes it feels like help might be a long way away - we're here to get to you as fast as we can. We work along with the SES, Ambulance and Police to keep our community and locals safe. If this is something you can see yourself doing as well please send us a message and we'll be happy to chat about how you can become a Volunteer Fire Fighter with the Tunnack Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Have you ever heard people refer to fire trucks as either a pumper or a tanker?

You won't see pumpers around our area because they are exactly what they sound like - a Pump on wheels. Pumpers are designed for urban areas where there are fire hydrants.

While Oatlands has fire hydrants Tunnack does not! So we have tankers which means our trucks carry their own water source.

Tunnack has a medium truck we call our 4.1 which is a purpose built CAFS tanker. CAFS means Compressed Air Foam System. When you add compressed air at high pressure to your foam and water mix you can do an awful lot of fire fighting with a relatively small amount of water. This is very important when living in area's such as ours where water can be in high demand.

Tunnack Brigade has the only CAFS truck in our Southern Midlands area - the next closest is Bridgewater. Tunnack Brigade was chosen to get this truck as we are located centrally between Oatlands, the highway at Jericho and Colebrook/Campania. All our brigade members have received specialist training to use it effectively and safely.

If you'd like to see this truck for yourself we'll be at our station today at midday for our monthly BBQ and meeting. We're pretty proud of this vehicle and would love to share some of it's unique features with you.

In the coming weeks we're receiving an upgrade to our other fire vehicle - our 5.1 Landcruiser and we look forward to sharing it's new features with you soon.

Always supervise your burn-offs...

🔥 Reminder: Always supervise your burn-offs 🔥

Conditions across Tasmania remain dry, so it’s important to take extra care with any outdoor burning.

While Fire Permits are not currently required, people are encouraged to register burns in advance with Tasmania Fire Service by calling 1800 000 699.

Registering a burn will ensure your local brigade are aware of your plans should they need to respond, and you will prevent having a brigade turn up unnecessarily.

If you’re planning to burn:
• Always have an adult in attendance until the fire is completely extinguished
• Be prepared to manage the fire and monitor changing weather conditions
• Have suitable, working firefighting equipment on hand
• Never light fires in peat, humus or marram grass
• Let your neighbours know—smoke can impact health and farming operations (especially vineyards)

Before you leave any fire:
👉 Soak it.
👉 Stir it.
👉 Soak it again.

Also think carefully when lighting campfires or using machinery, and double check that recent fires (including fire pits) are fully out.

⚠️ Remember: Landowners are responsible for any damage caused by fires that escape their property.
📞 If you see signs of a fire re-igniting (smoke or flames), call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Stay informed and prepared:

• Prepare your property and bushfire plan: https://bushfire.tas.gov.au/

Lest We Forget.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

Always store any fuel you have safely and securely.
29/03/2026

Always store any fuel you have safely and securely.

👨‍🚒Tasmania Fire Service is warning of the potential fire safety risk to stockpiling petrol and diesel at home.

⚠️🔥Storing extra fuel at home increases the risk of fire, fumes, and creates unsafe storage conditions.

➡️ To keep yourself, your household, and your community safe, please be aware of the following advice.

📌 Store only small amounts of fuel at home and ensure quantities remain below dangerous goods threshold limits.

📌 Use approved, clearly labelled fuel containers that comply with Australian Standards for flammable and combustible liquids.

📌 Keep fuel in a cool, well ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and any potential ignition sources to minimise fire and vapour hazards.

📌 Store fuel separately from incompatible chemicals, ensuring containers are upright, secure, and protected from heat.

📌 Maintain appropriate fire safety equipment, such as a portable dry chemical fire extinguisher, and ensure anyone who may need to use it understands safe operation.

📌 Keep all flammable liquids out of reach of children.

📌 Be aware that vapours from flammable liquids can significantly increase fire risks in both home fires and bushfires.

➡️ For further safety information visit the WorkSafe Tasmania website.
