🔎 Reviva Reuse Shop Mystery Item of the Week

Last week’s mystery item had a few of our followers guessing quickly 👀
It turned out to be vintage German sugar tongs, used to make Feuerzangenbowle, a traditional German drink.

A cone of sugar is placed on top, soaked in rum and set alight. As it burns, the caramelised sugar slowly melts into the drink below 🔥

Now for this week’s mystery item...
Any idea what this one is? 🤔

Look at this transformation! From old louvre doors to a beautiful shoe box 💚♻️

Sally has transformed a second-hand find into something practical, stylish and full of character.

We think you’ve done a fantastic job, Sally! 👏💚

It’s a great reminder that reuse is about more than saving money, it’s about seeing the potential in items others might throw out and turning them into something useful again.

We love seeing projects like this that give pre-loved materials a second life.

It’s National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), and at Resource Recovery Australia, we’re for reconciliation.

What does it mean to be ‘All In’?

Across our organisation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and non-Aboriginal staff work together side by side. We’re united by our purpose to support people, strengthen communities and create a better future for people and planet.

We’re stronger because of the knowledge, experience and leadership Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people bring to our work.

But being ‘All In’ means recognising that reconciliation is not something that sits with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people alone – it belongs to all of us, and it requires consistent action.

It means being honest about what we’re doing well, where we can keep improving, and how we can keep moving forward with care and respect.

This week, join us in taking time to pause, learn and think about how we keep walking together toward reconciliation — this week, and every day.

🔎 Reviva Reuse Shop Mystery Item of the Week

Last week’s mystery had plenty of you guessing 💚♻️
Our most popular guess was an old ash tray, the kind you might have found in trains, buses or cars back in the day.

But the sea‑farers amongst us had another idea, identifying it as an old automatic bailer, used in dinghies to help keep the boat dry. A very important piece of equipment we would think!

Once again, we loved reading all your thoughts, memories and knowledge. Thank you for jumping in and playing along.

Now for this week’s mystery 👀
What do you think this ornately designed tool was used for?

Five years of partnership 🎂

This week we’re celebrating five years of working alongside Rockhampton Regional Council to deliver resource recovery outcomes for the local community.

Over that time, the service has continued to grow. We’ve expanded to Gracemere, launched The Tinkerage, and continued to build on the impressive waste diversion from our Reviva Reuse Shops.

Together, we’ve helped divert valuable resources from landfill while creating spaces where the community can engage more closely with their local waste management sites and what they have to offer.

We’re proud of what’s been achieved together and grateful for the strong working relationship with the Rockhampton Regional Waste & Recycling team. ♻️

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who choose to give their time to help reduce waste while connecting with their local community 💚

Thank you to volunteers like Michelle and Dennis, who help bring this work to life ♻️

At Resource Recovery Australia, volunteering is one of the ways people can connect with what we do and be part of reuse in action.

While our social enterprise creates jobs and training opportunities through , volunteering alongside our teams is a great way to get involved, build confidence and feel part of something meaningful.

It’s a chance to meet new people, learn practical skills and contribute to keeping good items out of landfill.

If you know someone who would like to make 2026 their year to volunteer, feel free to share this with them or tag them below 👇

What if waste could become music? 🎶♻️

This incredible workshop at The Tinkerage in Dunmore brought creativity and reuse to life in the best way.

Led by local musician and instrument maker Mark Holder Keeping, participants turned salvaged materials into their very own instruments.

There was plenty of experimenting, creativity and hands-on learning, all leading up to a relaxed musical jam where everyone got to play what they had created.

Moments like these show how reuse can spark creativity, build confidence and bring people together in really meaningful ways 💚♻️

🔎 Reviva Reuse Shop Mystery Item of the Week

Last week’s mystery definitely had the community divided 💚♻️
Was it a hook for moving bales of hay or produce, a tool for lifting drain lids, or even a vintage boot pull that could date back as far as WW1?

After reading through all your thoughts, we’re leaning towards it being a boot pull. Many of you pointed out that a bale or produce hook is usually sharp at one end and the hook sits out from the handle, rather than being in line with it.
That said… a mystery is a mystery. Will we ever truly know? 🧐

Wow, this mystery solving is fun! Thanks to everyone who participated and shared their knowledge.

Now for this week’s mystery… 👀
What on earth could this metal contraption be used for?

✨ Every week we’re amazed by the curiosity and knowledge in our community. Thanks for helping give these items a second life and a second story 💚♻️

🎙️ On air with OKR FM Wallan

Our Deputy General Manager Ally Glendenning recently spoke with Tony Wertz on OKRFM about the impact of Reviva Reuse Shops in Mitchell Shire 💚♻️

In the interview, Ally shares how Reviva is creating local jobs and training opportunities for people facing barriers to work, while helping communities access affordable, quality items during a time when many households are feeling cost of living pressures.

It is the support from the community that makes this possible. Every donation helps keep good items in use and allows us to deliver meaningful outcomes for both people and place.
