Lions Youth Haven

Lions Youth Haven As a working farm inside Canberra, we focus on education, job preparedness, accommodation and horticulture for young people in our communities.

Westwood Farm, as it is known today, provides a refuge or haven for the at-risk youth in our communities through contracted service providers in education, job preparedness, accommodation and horticulture. Westwood Farm is a working farm inside the bounds of the city of Canberra. The farm is managed by Lions Youth Haven Inc: a not-for-profit organisation owned and supported by the Lions Clubs in t

he Canberra and Queanbeyan region (District 201N2). Lions Youth Haven was the vision of our founder Sel Westwood who convinced the ACT Government in 1988 that Lions could turn an abandoned farm on the Kambah Pool Road into a haven for youth at risk in our community. Lions Youth Haven also runs a commercial horse agistment operation for up to 65 horses in stables and private and shared paddocks and has a registered Red Angus cattle stud. Our objectives are to provide facilities and services which:

- allow young people in situations of crisis to find a refuge and support;
- provide support for disengaged young people where they can gain confidence and self respect;
- provide these young people with training in basic skills which equip them better to fill their places in society as self-sufficient and productive individuals; and
- give these young people a place in the outdoors to learn about and develop their own dignity in an outdoor environment.

Thank you to the students and schools who took part in the Farm Skills Program for term 2!

The animal activities are always a favourite with our students, especially a bossy miniature horse aptly named Boss. His manners with the students are exemplary but he likes to be top dog/horse with the other animals. The students were very engaged with his training in an attempt to encourage him to interact nicely with the other animals, and we appreciate their sterling efforts to further civilise him.

An added attraction last term were 2 poddy lambs who needed bottle feeding and special attention, and the students showed them the love and care they needed, and they are now healthy, happy and growing up way too fast.

In their evaluations, the students mentioned animals as their number 1 favorite activity and food is often number 2. This term the students prepared warm and hearty meals for lunch, curried sausages earning a few ticks, along with hamburgers and potato tortillas.

In addition to animal grooming and feeding, cooking and food preparation, the students were given the opportunity to create artistic responses to their experiences, learn a few bushcraft skills and take a nature hike on Forster's hill.
