MOTH invites you to Remembrance: a tribute to six musicians who served in and survived the Great War, an afternoon of story, music and reflection on Sunday 1st Feb, 2-4pm

Acclaimed violist Robert Harris presents a commentary with musical interludes and imagery about six leading composers who served in yet survived the First World War - Ralph Vaughan Williams, Fritz Kreisler, Maurice Ravel, Percy Grainger, Arthur Benjamin and Paul Hindemith. Their familiar popular melodies include Greensleeves, Van Dieman’s Land, Love’s Sorrow, Bolero, English Country Gardens, Londonderry Air/Danny Boy, Jamaican Rumba and more. Surprising tales commemorate but also celebrate these composers, while acknowledging other composers who served - many not surviving. Mention of ‘War Poets’ and ‘War Artists’ allow literary parallels to C E W Bean’s service during and following the war, and to the contemporaneous world of Tuggeranong.

Entry cost of $25 includes a delicious Devonshire Tea after the presentation (cash only, pay at the door).

Bookings essential by Jan 28 to Jenny Horsfield on [email protected]

Some before and after photos from shelter belt #4 (along Tuggeranong Ck). The "before" photos were taken in April 2025 and the "after" photos were taken in September 2025. The ride-on mower was used to cut back the blackberries. Work will now need to be done by hand in the areas that the mower can't reach (amongst fallen timber and around tree trunks) and follow-up work will be needed to control regrowth.

Minders of Tuggeranong Homestead (MOTH) invites you to the 5th CEW Bean Memorial Lecture, Tuggeranong Homestead Sunday 28th September 2-4 pm.

Presented by Professor Melanie Oppenheimer:
“They also serve who only stand and wait:” re-evaluating the portrayal of volunteers on the home front in the Official Histories of World War I and II

For over thirty years Professor Melanie Oppenheimer has been exploring the valuable role of voluntary organisations and volunteers in both WW I and WW II. Ernest Scott’s WW1 volume includes a chapter on patriotic funds, but there is scant reference to volunteers in the WW II Official History. This lecture will explore the reasons for this neglect, which points to a general lack of understanding of the role and value of volunteers in our society.
Professor Melanie Oppenheimer is a respected historian based in the School of History at the Australian National University. Her many notable publications include: The Power of Humanity: 100 years of Australian Red Cross; The Last Battle: Soldier Settlement in Australia 1916-1939 (with Bruce Scates); Oceans of Love (about WW1 nurse Narrelle Hobbes)

The event includes Devonshire tea in the homestead after the talk. Bookings essential, contact [email protected]. Payment of $25 pp, cash at the door.
