Every speaker you see standing in front of a crowd started exactly the same way nervous, unsure, and stepping into something new.

That something new can look like winning a speech contest at a club level,
Then winning the area contest,
To competing at a division contest for the very first time…

This is what growth looks like.

Never trying to chase perfection but always moving towards progress.

And it all starts with stepping outside your comfort zone.

We couldn’t be prouder to be part of this amazing journey for Michelle.

Afraid of public speaking? You’re not alone.

Around 75% of people experience some level of anxiety when speaking in front of others. This fear even has a name, GLOSSOPHOBIA and for many people it can hold them back from opportunities at work, in leadership, or even in everyday conversations.

The interesting part is that this fear comes from our ancient survival instincts. Thousands of years ago, standing out from the group meant danger. Today, when we stand up to speak, our brain still triggers that same fight-or-flight response.

The good news is that fear can be overcome and re-trained.

Every time you speak, your brain learns that nothing bad happens. The nerves settle, confidence grows, and what once felt terrifying becomes manageable (and hopefully enjoyable).

That’s exactly why millions of people have turned to Toastmasters, for a supportive environment where you can practise speaking, gain confidence, and grow at your own pace.

A little nervousness before speaking is normal.
But with the right support, it doesn’t have to hold you back.

If building confidence in speaking is something you'd like to improve, come and see what we’re about at Latrobe Valley Toastmasters.

From seasoned members to first-timers thinking “maybe I could do this…”, this night captured what Toastmasters is really about, growth, encouragement, a few nerves, and a lot of laughs.

We reflected on a year of stepping outside comfort zones, finding our voices, and discovering that confidence grows faster when you’re not doing it alone.
