Rotary D9815 MUNA - Model United Nations Assembly

Rotary D9815 MUNA - Model United Nations Assembly MUNA, an acronym for Model United Nations Assembly, is an official Rotary District 9815 Youth Project

MUNA was introduced to Australia in 1980 when Rotary clubs in NSW were invited to sponsor a team of two students to represent a nominated country at an assembly modelled on the format and function of the United Nations. By 1995 five Australian students were sponsored to participate in the MUNA conducted by the Rotary Club of San Francisco as part of the Rotary/United Nations presidential Conferenc

e to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. Before the debate begins a delegate may deliver a brief address setting out the most important facts about the country he or she represents. The resolutions to be debated are selected from those actually debated by the UN as well as a number of motions proposed by the teams. The debates reproduce genuine UN debates, often with a fine flow of rhetoric, points of order, motions of dissent and bloc walkouts!

Rotary D9815 MUNA 2024 was held at Lyndale Secondary College on Saturday 17 August. Fifty-six delegates, representing twenty-eight UN-member countries debated four resolutions.

Topics ranged from the situation in the South China Sea, strengthening the role of the UN and democracy, preventing and combatting crimes against the environment, and the state of global food security.

A wonderful day made possible by many! Thanks to the MUNA committee, Rotaractors, teachers, Rotarians and of course, the delegates.

And a very special thanks to Nicky Chung, member of Rotary Club of Wonthaggi and CEO of Australia-Vietnamese Womens Association for her $500 sponsorship towards MUNA.

Guest speaker, Gabrielle Williams MP for Dandenong, spoke of her experience of MUNA as the delegate for Indonesia and the positive impact it had on her as a young person. With her young son on her hip, Gabrielle spoke of her passion to improve the lives of all in her electorate. Through having first-class educational facilities (such as Lyndale Secondary College), and educational pathways that connect to secure employment opportunities, youth will have a brighter future. A wonderful presentation that was well-received by all present.

Lastly, many thanks to Lyndale Secondary College for allowing D9815 MUNA to be conducted in their amazing auditorium!
