Our working bee scheduled in our Calendar of Works for tomorrow Friday 28th August is cancelled and moved to Thursday September 10th, 10-11.30. Meet at Yongala shed. Jackson from the council has lots of plants to put in before the rains cease and Il Nino settles in as predicted. Let's see how many plants we can get into the ground! Hope to see you then.

Last cash or card sales will be at the Working Bee in Gums on Sunday 23rd August from 0900-1000 with the raffle being drawn at 1030 at the Yongala Community Landcare Shed (near Brookside Cellars Community Arts Centre) and broadcast on Zoom (see comments for link). Earthstars (Geastraceae)
We have quite a number of different species of delightful Earthstars in the Gums Reserve. They are called Earthstars because the mature fruiting body has a sort of star shape. The fungus starts as a round ball which emerges from the soil and then the outer coating splits into a number of ‘rays’ giving it a star-shape appearance. In the centre of the ‘rays’ is a soft central spore containing sac which may or may not sit on a short or long stalk. Our different species can be very small (less than 1 cm across) or large (up to 3.5 cm), have a sac sitting on a stalk or not, and have different numbers of rays. They may also have a pointy spout at the top of the sac or just a small hole.
Rain drops falling onto the soft sac cause puffs of spores to be released through the hole in the top and so this group of fungi are in the same general family as are puffballs. They occur in the Reserve almost anywhere including grassy areas or places where there is woodchip mulch.
