A Tribute of Gratitude to Velvet Pesu
Spirit of Africa Townsville – 2017 Festival
With broken hearts and deep gratitude, we honour the life and legacy of Velvet Pesu, who so powerfully shared her gift with us at the 2017 Townsville Spirit of Africa Festival.
Velvet was not just a performer — she was a presence. From the moment she lifted her voice, something shifted in the air. Her sound carried history, soul, and truth. It transcended language, borders, and nations, reminding us that music is one of humanity’s oldest and most sacred connections. Through her voice, Africa spoke. Through her rhythm, the world listened.
Velvet was life itself in human form. Warm, magnetic, grounded, and radiant, she carried a deep knowing of who she was and why she was here. There was no separation between the woman and the music — her spirit flowed straight through her voice and into the hearts of everyone present. She sang with love, with power, and with an honesty that left people changed.
Beyond the stage, Velvet was community. She was generosity. She was laughter that unmistakable, husky, bellowing laugh that made you feel instantly at home. She made people feel seen, valued, and safe. She carried herself with strength and tenderness in equal measure, a woman who knew her worth and lifted others without effort or performance.
The loss of Velvet has shaken us deeply. As a community, we are grieving not only a gifted artist, but a champion of humanity, love, and connection. The outpouring of grief and celebration across the world is a testament to the immense impact she had how many lives she touched, how much light she gave.
Our hearts are shattered for her beautiful daughters, who carry her legacy forward in their blood and spirit. We hold them in love and prayer. To Tichawona Noble Mashawa and family our dear friends, we stand with you in sorrow, solidarity, and love. There are no words sufficient for this loss only presence, remembrance, and gratitude for having walked alongside someone so extraordinary.
Velvet’s voice did not belong to one place or one people it belonged to the world. And though her physical presence is gone, her spirit is not diminished. It lives on in song, in memory, in community, and in every act of love she inspired.
Thank you, Velvet, for what you gave us in 2017 Spirit Of Africa Townsville and for what you continue to give the world.
You were, and always will be, a force of love.
Rest in power, sister.
