Footy is about fun not fear🏉

During major sporting events, like State of Origin, domestic violence tends to increase by approximately 40%.

It doesn’t have to be this way, everyone has a right to feel safe on game night.

The Survivor Service’s operating hours are 9:00am - 3:00pm, if you need support this evening see slide 2 & 3 for some helpful contacts. If it’s an emergency always call 000.

What a great day!

The Survivor Service was proud to support Broken to Brilliant TM in bringing the Financial Superwoman Workshop to Townsville.

It was wonderful to see women come together to learn, connect and have meaningful conversations about financial wellbeing, confidence and independence. Events like this are so important, particularly for victim-survivors, as financial security can play a significant role in recovery, choice and future opportunities.

A huge thank you to the team at Broken to Brilliant, the expert volunteers who generously shared their knowledge, and every woman who attended and contributed to the day. Your willingness to learn, connect and invest in yourselves made the event what it was.

Regional communities deserve access to these opportunities, and we are grateful to have been part of bringing this important workshop to North Queensland.

Here's to continuing conversations about financial empowerment and supporting women to thrive.

Townsville. What a day. 💚

On the river, with a room full of powerhouse women, the Financial Superwomen™ Townsville event was exactly what it needed to be: real, practical, honest and empowering.

This collaboration brought together Brisbane Financial Superwomen and local Townsville experts, all working toward one shared purpose: giving women access to knowledge, support, confidence, and practical financial tools to help them be financially secure and stable.

Because financial empowerment is not just about money. It is about choice. It is about safety. It is about confidence. It is about independence. It is about knowing there is a way forward, even when life has knocked you sideways.

The conversations in that room mattered. The connections mattered. The local knowledge mattered. The lived experience mattered. The professional guidance mattered.

This is what happens when women back women with real support, real education and real action.

A heartfelt thank you to every organisation and individual who made this day possible:

Commonwealth Bank | CommunityGro | Cinch Business Solutions | Harcourts | Loan Market Edge | NQ Business Advisors | Numbers By Design | The Survivor Service | Dawson Family Law | NQWLS | Tact Counselling | DVNQ

And to every woman who showed up, shared, listened and supported, thank you. You are the reason this room was what it was.

Brave. Resilient. Brilliant.

What a day. What a room. What a reminder of what is possible when women come together with purpose. 💚

Tonight, Queensland and New South Wales will battle it out on the field, but for many victim-survivors, major sporting events can be a time of increased risk.

Research has found domestic assaults increase during major sporting events, with studies showing increases of more than 40% during events such as State of Origin matches. Domestic and family violence services across Australia also report increased demand during and after major sporting events (Our Watch, 2025).

If tonight feels unsafe, or if someone you know may need support, help is available:

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

All In makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport, and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make
change.

The theme also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.

Reconciliation Australia turns 25 this year, and our 25th anniversary presents a renewed invitation to lift our actions and commitment for major change.
The work that remains to be done requires all of us to do our part. All In is not about guilt or shame, but about the reciprocal responsibility of being Australian.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, we must be all in for reconciliation.

FIRST NATIONS ARTWORK STORY
The hero visuals for NRW2026 feature artwork by acclaimed artist and Gumbaynggirr Bundjalung man Otis Hope Carey, titled Gaagal. The word ‘Gaagal’ translates to Ocean and is the totemic spiritual emblem of the Gumbaynggirr people. This is reflected in the topographical nature of the painting and its visual relationship to oceanic current charts and movements.

“We call the ocean Gaagal — it’s a really important clan totem and holds a lot of healing elements for us. We are saltwater and freshwater people, and any body of water is sacred to us. My paintings are my interpretation of my connection to water, I use patterns to capture the flow of connection and
the energetic rhythms of moving water.”

From Sorry to Action, this year's National Sorry
Day theme, reflects expectations that governments take
responsibility through tangible, measurable change.

We owe it to the survivors who are left – and the families of
survivors who have passed – to take swift, meaningful
action to address past wrongs and honour the memory of
all who gave evidence to the inquiry.

The urgency of acting now, to support elderly survivors in
their last years and decades, cannot be overstated.

Survivors need:
• culturally safe and affordable aged care, health
and healing services
• prioritised access to the records that hold their
histories and stories, and
• access to redress, regardless of the state or
territory they were removed from.

The theme for this year’s National Sorry Day is
From Sorry to Action. The call is clear: we must move from words to action, and this needs to happen now, not in another decade.

Acknowledging past harm is important, but acting to address it is critical. Sorry signals compassion; action delivers justice.

We encourage you to mark National Sorry Day on 26 May, and to stand with us to ensure this day is part of an ongoing commitment to truth-telling and healing.
