On this day in 1967, Australians voted overwhelmingly to amend the Constitution and count our Mob in the Census, a significant moment in the ongoing journey towards recognition, rights and equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

While the referendum did not deliver equality on its own, it marked an important step forward and a reminder of the power of collective action and continued advocacy.

We honour the generations who fought for change and remain committed to improving health, wellbeing and self determination for our communities.

Always Was, Always Will Be.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week 2026 and this year's theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. All In makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport, and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

The theme reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.

The artwork features work by acclaimed artist and Gumbaynggirr Bundjalung man Otis Hope Carey, titled Gaagal. The word ‘Gaagal’ translates to Ocean and is the totemic spiritual emblem of the Gumbaynggirr people. This is reflected in the topographical nature of the painting and its visual relationship to oceanic current charts and movements.

National Reconciliation Week 2026 runs from 27 May to 3 June. To find out more about this year's theme and events to attend near you visit: reconciliation.org.au/our-work/national-reconciliation-week
