CHECK IN...
Checking in means different things to different people. To me, it is a system whereby I am checking in with myself to determine my TRUE core emotion and what's driving thats emotion.
As a man, I used to be completely emotionally unaware. I had no idea what I was TRULY feeling because I had never learned what different emotions TRULY felt like. Where they lived in my body. How they drove my behaviours.
You may have seen those overblown psychology charts that show dozens, if not hundreds, of emotions. No wonder people are confused.
Instead, in mens work we generally like to break it down to 4 core emotions...
Joy, Sad, Mad and fear. All other emotions can generally be traced back to a derivative of one of these core emotions.
On the outside of those emotions we have shame and guilt. Guilt is the belief I have done something wrong. Shame is the belief that I AM something wrong, or that something is wrong with me. But if we scratch beneath the surface, we can usually trace shame or guilt to an unresolved core emotion.
In every mens circle I have ever sat in, we start with a check in...What is the core emotion I am feeling, and what is the event in my life thats driving that emotion?
Speaking generally, very few men check in with their emotions and even fewer are ever afforded a platform to voice it without fear of judgement or persecution... and in my judgement, thats why mens circles are vital for the personal and emotional growth for men.
Are you ready to check in?
