The winner of the $5000 Open Award for the 71𝘴𝘡 π˜›π˜°π˜Έπ˜―π˜΄π˜·π˜ͺ𝘭𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘡 𝘚𝘰𝘀π˜ͺ𝘦𝘡𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘡 𝘈𝘸𝘒𝘳π˜₯𝘴 was this striking work by Lee Kirby titled π˜•π˜’π˜΅π˜Άπ˜³π˜¦β€™π˜΄ 𝘡π˜ͺ𝘯𝘺 𝘨𝘢𝘒𝘳π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘒𝘯 𝘐𝘐.

Karina Devine, the judge for the Awards, said β€œThe subject of this portrait emerges from a mysterious background. It is the contract of dark and light that makes this work so riveting. All completed in charcoal makes the work even more remarkable. There is so much texture and clever omission of detail that makes this more than a portrait.”

This award was sponsored by Townsville City Galleries, Townsville City Council.

This weekend is your last chance to see the exhibition. The 71𝘴𝘡 π˜›π˜°π˜Έπ˜―π˜΄π˜·π˜ͺ𝘭𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘡 𝘚𝘰𝘀π˜ͺ𝘦𝘡𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘡 𝘈𝘸𝘒𝘳π˜₯𝘴 closes on Sunday 18 October 2026.
