Riverway parkrun

Riverway parkrun A free, weekly, timed 5k event every Saturday morning at 7am at Tony Ireland Stadium, Riverway. Everyone is welcome to walk, run or volunteer.

Riverway parkrun is a FREE weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 7am from the Riverway Village Green next to Tony Ireland Stadium at Riverway in Townsville. It is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan. It offers an opportunity for all the

local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain. We want to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE! Taking part is easy – just register before your first ever parkrun at www.parkrun.com.au/register and print off your individual athlete barcode. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there (remembering to take your barcode with you)! After the run, there will be the chance to socialise with everyone FatDogz Cafe (Shop2, 30 Hervey Range Road), to maybe swap stories about your run that day, chat to other runners over a cup of tea or coffee. So whether you are a complete novice looking to get yourself started on your own "running journey" or a seasoned athlete wanting to use this as a part of your training schedule, you’re welcome to come along and join us.

JUNE IS BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Did you know 3200 people are diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in QLD annually? Early detection can significantly increade your survival chances, but you can alsonhelp decrease your risk by ensuring you meet some lifestyle habits.

Nicole's note: being active everyday does not mean going to the gym for an hour. It can mean going for a gentle walk for 30 mins, or moving around in a pool. It doesn't have to be difficult or strenuous. Just move.

BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS

This weekend we are hosting the "Bum Run" to raise awareness for Bowel Cancer. June is Bowel Cancer Awareness month and a group of parkrunners will be attending our event on the 20th of June to raise awareness for this fatal and often overlooked condition.

Please be aware of the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer and see a doctor quickly if you have any of them.

If you would like to make a donation to Bowel Cancer Australia, please go to https://www.bowelcanceraustralia.org/get-involved/donations-gifts/make-a-donation/ and reference "Bum Run 2025" if you like. Your donation will go towards funding more research, bringing more awareness to the condition and reducing the impact it has on Australians.

FINISH LINE ETIQUETTE

A few things to remember to keep our finish line running smoothly

**ONLY GO THROUGH ONCE - if you have already finished and gone back to be with a friend, please DO NOT go into the finish chute a second time. You can go around the outside of the chute but entering the chute and crossing the finish line a second time can record another finish time and confuse the volunteers.

**DO NOT HARRASS THE TIMEKEEPER - the timekeeper's role is to record the time. Not to advise you of your time. If you wish to know your finish time immediately, you can ask the timekeeper but if you are ignored or they can't tell you immediately, DO NOT bother them again. DO NOT TRY TO TOUCH THEIR PHONE. The timekeeping app requires some skill in recording and a volunteer might be nervous or not able to read the time while also recording other finishers crossing the line. Your interruption may cause them to lose focus on recording times causing misalignment in times and tokens. You will have your time emailed to you later in the day (often within an hour of the event finishing). If it is critical that you know your finish time straight way and the timekeeper is not able to assist, please see the Run Director who will assist you.

**PLEASE TAKE A TOKEN - it's easy to forget to do things after a hard effort, but the volunteers aren't always able to chase you down to hand you your token. They will try to keep it aside, however, if this happens a few times, there might be a mix up in getting the right token to you. If you are not registered, please either take a token and return it to the table, or advise the token handler you do not wish for a token.

If you have any concerns about volunteers on the day, please see the Run Director on duty.

If you believe any of this is unreasonable, I encourage you to take up a volunteer role to experience firsthand what is involved in finish line mechanics. Our key volunteers and I will also do all of the above to you in person so you may enjoy the full chaotic experience. 😉

Thank you for your co-operation and keeping our event running smooth.

It's Queensland Day on Saturday the 6th June.
We are asking everyone to wear your Maroon finery (clothing, wigs, tutus) to parkrun this weekend to celebrate our sunshine state.

HOW COOL! Thanks to Fraser’s fancy new glasses, we now have this clip of our beautiful (but relatively straight forward) course to show our first timers. The value of this will not be lost on anyone who has ever had to rely on a certain Run Director’s (🙋‍♀️) directions.

Thanks to the 298 runners and 17 volunteers who spent part of their precious Saturday morning with us and we look forward to doing it again next week.

UPDATE: ALL NECESSARY ROLES HAVE BEEN FILLED. THANK YOU, SUPERSTARS🌟

VOLLIE REQUEST:
MARSHAL MARSHAL MARSHAL!

We don't want to tell anyone to get lost but that's what might happen if we don't have any marshals.

We're chasing three marshals to help direct parkrunners out on the course tomorrow morning.

If you can help, please comment or PM the page.
