Men’s Health Week 💙

Looking after your health is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself and the people around you ✨

Whether it’s prioritising your physical health, taking care of your mental wellbeing, or reaching out to a mate for a chat, every small step makes a difference.

Life can get busy, and it’s easy to put your own wellbeing last. This week is a reminder to slow down, check in with yourself, and make your health a priority.

Taking care of yourself isn’t just about today - it’s about creating a healthier future and being able to show up for the people who matter most.

This Men’s Health Week, take a moment to connect with those around you, start a conversation, and remember that support is always there when you need it 💙

For more than 25 years, National Reconciliation week has been apart of Australians path to connecting with others. This year’s theme “All In” reminds us that reconciliation is a shared journey - one that calls us to stand together in support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, histories and futures. As we continue this journey we acknowledge the resilience and strength.

The 1967 Referendum was a moment in our shared history where Australians were ‘All In’.

More than 90% of Australian voters voted ‘Yes’ to counting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and giving the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have always protested and fought against injustices. There was no single moment that sparked the 1967 Referendum, more a groundswell of support for change led by many different people and organisations.

This reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

From Deadly Start student to future community nurse 🤍

Meet Melinda Burns, one of our Deadly Start Skill-Based Trainees.

Inspired by her Aunty, who worked in healthcare for 55 years, Melinda knew she wanted to follow a similar path and give back to her community.

When the hospital team visited her school to run an information session, something clicked.

“It felt like a good pathway to take.”

Now, Melinda splits her time between school and the hospital, working Mondays from 7am to 3:30pm — and often putting in extra study time to stay on top of her learning.

Her first day? A little overwhelming.

Coming from a small town to the pace of Mount Isa Hospital was a big shift.

“Everybody knew what they were doing, and I was kind of just standing there not knowing what to do.”

But she stuck with it.

Since starting, Melinda has learned how to read observations, present handover, work as part of a team and build confidence speaking in front of others.

She credits the support of staff and mentors for helping her settle in — picking up practical tips, building skills and always encouraging her to ask questions.

“Don’t guess. Definitely ask if you’re not sure.”

When asked to describe her traineeship in one word? Exciting.

For Melinda, the program isn’t just work experience — it’s a stable pathway and a glimpse into a future career in healthcare.

And when she finishes her traineeship and heads to university?

She plans to return home to Normanton to work in community nursing.

Full circle. 🤍

We’re proud to support the next generation of healthcare workers through our Deadly Start program.
