Australia experienced its worst peacetime military aviation disaster 30 years ago today.

On the evening of 12 June 1996, two Australian Army Black Hawk helicopters collided in the Townsville Field Training Area. Fifteen members of the Special Air Service Regiment and three members of the 5th Aviation Regiment tragically died in the accident.

Today we remember those who lost their lives, the survivors, and their families.

Lest we forget.

After more than 20 years in the Army, life threw Jane* some tough curve balls.

Supporting her children was always Jane’s focus, but the foundations she had built after leaving service soon began to crumble.

“I hit breaking point and was back to square one again, living on a dollar, thinking, ‘How will we get through this? That’s when I reached out to RSL Queensland.”

No matter where you are in your journey, RSL Queensland is here. Whether it’s DVA advocacy assistance, employment support or practical online learning, we offer a wide range of services to support every step of your Defence and post-service journey.

June 7 is National Military Working Dog Day, when we pay our respects to Australia’s four-legged heroes and their handlers.

On this day in 2010, Sapper Darren Smith and Sapper Jacob Moerland, alongside explosive detection dog Herbie, were tragically killed by an IED in Afghanistan. Today we honour their memory and give thanks to Australian Defence Force dogs for their courage and loyalty.

This year marks the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France.
D-Day marked the beginning of the Allied liberation of Europe from N**i occupation during World War II. On 6 June 1944, the largest armada of ships ever assembled, and more than 10,000 supporting aircraft, stormed the beaches of Normandy.
Approximately 3,000 Australians participated in the D-Day landings. Royal Australian Air Force squadrons provided cover by bombing German military units, while Australian Army and Royal Australian Navy personnel took part in the land and sea invasion. More than 4,000 lives were lost on D-Day.

Lest we forget.

Stephen Day said one of the great privileges in life is to be recognised by fellow citizens so he was deeply honoured to receive this award.

“My work as a soldier and with veterans has always been done as part of team, so I accept this honour on behalf of my team mates,”

Premier David Crisafulli presented awards to this year’s recipients at a ceremony in Brisbane last night ahead of QLD Day on Saturday 6 June for those who embody the State’s spirit through service, leadership and community contribution.
