Are you a Gold Coast local?

The Mateship Run is back for 2026 on 8 November, raising funds to support veterans.

Occurring in the leadup to Remembrance Day, the 11.11km distance for the run nods to the signing of the Armistice ending fighting in World War 1, at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month.

The event also offers a 5km event and a 2.5km Junior Dash, and all events welcome veterans, families, friends and community members to support or participate.

What if we told you one of Australia's most daring wartime missions happened right here in Queensland... and most people have never heard of it?

In 1943, a small team of Australian commandos slipped into Townsville Harbour under the cover of darkness as part of a secret operation known as the Scorpion Raid.

Their mission was audacious. Their success helped shape future special operations. Yet today, few Australians know the story.

More than 80 years later, veterans, descendants and community members retraced that same journey across Cleveland Bay, bringing this remarkable piece of military history back to life.

At RSL Queensland, we're proud to help preserve and share stories like these. Not just to honour those who served, but to ensure the moments that shaped our nation's history aren't lost to time.

Because some stories deserve to be remembered. And some are too extraordinary to be forgotten.

A day on the green. A shared conversation. A chance to reconnect.

For many veterans, leaving the military can mean losing the camaraderie and support network that came with service. That's why Kilcoy RSL Sub Branch's annual ADF Golf Day is about much more than a game. It brings together veterans, serving personnel and families to build friendships, strengthen connections and remind people they're not alone.

"It's the satisfaction of seeing a veteran walk through the door, being quite withdrawn, and then after a while becoming part of our close-knit Sub Branch."

This is what it means to be part of a community. To find connection, support and mateship long after service ends.

Heather took first place in the City Large Residential category at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. Her garden includes a moving Lest We Forget tribute.

When Sandra Twigg's husband deployed to Vietnam, the support of fellow Army wives helped her navigate the challenges of military life. Decades later, she's spent more than 30 years providing that same support to veterans and Defence families in Townsville.

From welcoming new military families to helping restore accommodation for veterans in need, her impact has been felt across generations.

It has been 27 years since INTERFET deployed to East Timor. When the local population voted for independence from Indonesia in 1999, violence erupted across the region with a brutality that shocked the world.

Pro-Indonesia militias killed thousands of civilians, destroyed entire communities and forced many more to flee their homes. Australia led the international force that restored stability, protected civilians and enabled the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.

More than 5,000 members of the ADF served with INTERFET, making it Australia’s largest overseas military deployment since the Vietnam War. The mission succeeded in restoring peace and security, paving the way for East Timor, now Timor-Leste, to become an independent nation.
