How beautiful is this?! A little kindness goes a long way 🥰
Well done everyone and welcome to Townsville! 🤗

Kirwan Health Campus staff have started a hospital-wide donation drive to support refugee families cared for by the Townsville Hospital and Health Service. 🩵💙

The THHS refugee health team works with newly arrived families to help them settle into the Australian healthcare system, connecting them with GPs, dentists and specialists, and managing immunisations and health screening.

Refugee health clinical nurse Lauren McMillan said the donation drive began small, with a welcome pack to help families feel safe in an unfamiliar place.

"We found when we were meeting people for the first time and they've just landed in the country, a new, unfamiliar place, that things were very overwhelming," Lauren said.

"They get a single bag per person when they arrive in the country, and that's how they start their lives."

Word spread among Kirwan staff, who began bringing in toys, clothing, shoes and baby items from home.
"It was actually overwhelming seeing the scale of donations, we thought we'd get a pencil case here and there," Lauren said.

"The impact on families has really stuck with us as a team, because although the items being donated are such small things for us, they mean the world to these families.

"We gave a jar of coffee to a mum, and she was just hugging it like it was golden, she was so overwhelmed and said it was the best thing that had ever happened to her.

"Those stories are the reason we are doing this."

Here’s another local Feel Good Story…love your community spirit everyone!

“What do you get a 99-year-old for their birthday?”

That was the question Townsville woman Leone Kimlin faced when she began thinking about how to make her father-in-law Cliff’s birthday special.

Knowing Cliff had always loved receiving mail, Leone posted on Facebook asking people to send him a card ahead of his 99th birthday this weekend.

“I was hoping Cliff might get a couple of dozen letters… if he got 50, that would be absolutely amazing,” Ms Kimlin told ABC North Queensland’s Emma Jones.

Instead, Cliff has been inundated with letters, parcels and offers from people wanting to visit.

“To me, that is huge, that someone would take the time to do that. I just think it’s been absolutely beautiful,” Ms Kimlin said.

She believes the response has meant even more because Cliff’s world has become much smaller in recent months.

“For him to receive this outpouring of love and kindness is really special.”

Cliff will celebrate with a small family morning tea, a ride in a police car and, of course, plenty of birthday mail to open 🎂

We had a lovely morning playing games and painting Kindness Rocks. Thanks to our Kind Cafe Missy Moos Coffee for helping us keep most of our events free.

In support of domestic violence Survivors, we put together 35 toiltries kits and cards, delivered to DVNQ thanks to the generousity of these and MANY more people in our community 🤗 Because domestic violence is never ok 🤗🤗🤗

Beautiful cards with beautiful messages for domestic violence Survivors. We had some empowering/ enlightening conversations while colouring in and packing toiletries 🤗🤗🤗
We say No to domestic violence. You matter.
Cards will be delivered to DVNQ tomorrow. (I forgot to put them in the bags before we dropped them off yesterday!)
