☀️WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY | 10 OCTOBER ☀️

We cannot always bring sunshine into someone's life, but we can make certain they don't have to stand in the shadows alone.
Not every battle makes a sound. Not every wound leaves a scar... And not every smile tells the whole story.
Some people carry grief that has never found its words. Others live with anxiety, depression, trauma, loneliness or an exhaustion that sleep cannot remedy... And some are simply trying to make it through today. We live in a world that frequently celebrates resilience, yet seldom asks what it costs a person to be resilient. We admire those who keep going, but perhaps we should become equally attentive to those who need permission to stop... Because strength is not always found in perseverance. Sometimes it is found in the courage to say, "I'm struggling."... And sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is ensure that those who have spent their lives being strong finally have somewhere safe to put down what they've been carrying.
There is a profound difference between being surrounded by people and feeling that you belong. Human connection is not a luxury. It is fundamental to our wellbeing. We need to be seen, heard, understood and valued, not simply for what we contribute, but for who we are. At Sailability Townsville, we witness the extraordinary significance of seemingly ordinary moments. A conversation on the pontoon. A reassuring hand. Laughter carried across the water. Someone remembering your name. A friendship formed between people whose paths might otherwise never have crossed. These moments matter... because sometimes, what changes a person's day isn't a grand gesture. It is the quiet realisation that somebody is genuinely pleased they showed up. On World Mental Health Day, perhaps we can move beyond simply asking people if they're okay. Let's create communities where people feel safe enough to answer honestly. Where vulnerability is not mistaken for weakness.
Where asking for help is met with compassion rather than judgement... And where belonging is not something that must be earned.
You do not have to be happy to be worthy of love.
You do not have to be strong to deserve support... And you do not have to navigate every storm alone.
At Sailability Townsville, we believe that everybody deserves the opportunity to experience connection, friendship, dignity and joy...and perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give another human being is the reassurance that they are not invisible.

There is something rather extraordinary about looking towards the horizon and realising just how far you've travelled. Not because you knew exactly where you were going, or because every decision came with a reassuring sign from the heavens... But because, somewhere along the way, you found the courage to begin... And perhaps, more importantly, you found people willing to travel beside you.
Today, beneath an absolutely glorious Townsville sky, Sailability Townsville was once again a beautiful reminder that the most meaningful journeys aren't always measured in nautical miles. Sometimes they're measured in firsts. In friendships. In confidence gained. In laughter shared.. and goodness gracious, were we a huggy bunch today!
Our gorgeous Leanne and the utterly irresistible Skipper came bearing their usual generous helpings of affection🐾 Frankly, it wouldn't be a proper Sailability Thursday without seeing their beautiful selves. Between the cuddles, smiles and enthusiastic distribution of love, these two have perfected the fine art of making people feel welcome... And speaking of milestones...
🎉 Ella took out her very first sailor! What a wonderful achievement and another beautiful chapter in her sailing journey.
⛵ Josh is now a qualified skipper! Congratulations! Another capable pair of hands at the helm and another reason to celebrate.
🏆 Lorena, aboard the mighty Bathtub, won our dock and go race! Evidently, one should never underestimate a vessel named after bathroom furniture!
We also celebrated Alan and Ella receiving their new uniforms. It's official, you two! Welcome to the beautifully dressed ranks of our ever growing Sailability crew.
How lovely it was to welcome Mika back, greet Thao, and see Paul again after far too long. We also raised our voices to wish Amanda a very happy birthday 🎂 And just when we thought the day couldn't become any sweeter, along came Krispy Kremes!
Because apparently, sailing, sunshine, friendship and hugs weren't quite enough. We needed doughnuts too 🍩 But beyond the celebrations, something else deserves recognition.
The extraordinary people who make all of this possible. Our volunteers are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and wonderfully competent. There is a quiet confidence in watching people work together so naturally, anticipating what needs doing, offering assistance without being asked, and making everyone feel they belong.
That doesn't happen by accident.
It grows from generosity, trust, shared purpose and the understanding that every person has something valuable to contribute... And lately, our little corner of the world has been growing in some rather exciting directions.
We've been celebrating some wonderful recognition, with our media work shortlisted for an award! Our fundraising adventures have been keeping us busy too, from our recent Cowboys Leagues Club raffle to our upcoming luxury getaway raffle. Every ticket, every helping hand and every generous gesture contributes to making sailing accessible to more people... And there's more on the horizon...
Our very own Ray Gibson will be sharing his extraordinary racing adventures at The Yacht Club on 12 November, taking us on a journey around the world and beyond.
As for a few other rather exciting developments quietly taking shape...
Well, let's just say there are some stories worth waiting for. 🤫🎬
Which brings me back to today... we spend so much of our lives believing we ought to know exactly where we're going. That progress must follow a predetermined course, that achievement has a finishing line, and that courage means never feeling uncertain. But perhaps courage is something gentler. Perhaps it is simply the willingness to keep discovering what is possible.
To welcome someone new.
To try something for the first time.
To offer a hand, a hug, a little encouragement.
To recognise that none of us is ever truly finished growing... And perhaps that's the most beautiful thing about Sailability Townsville.
We're not simply teaching people to sail.
We're learning what becomes possible when people believe in one another.
To everyone who helped make today so wonderfully special, thank you.
The horizon is looking rather exciting, the crew is magnificent, and our story is still being written.
We're not finished becoming... And isn't that a wonderful thing?

Well… this was a rather lovely surprise🩷
I’m incredibly humbled to have been named a finalist for Emerging Talent at the 2026 North Queensland Media Awards, representing Sailability Townsville.
When I began creating content for Sailability, the purpose was never awards. It was simply to tell the stories of the people who turn up each week, to make disability and inclusion visible, to celebrate our volunteers, and perhaps encourage someone watching from home to think, maybe there’s a place there for me too.
Somehow, those little stories from Pontoon 1 have travelled much further than I ever imagined.
To find my name alongside people working professionally in advertising, marketing and radio is both slightly terrifying, and an enormous honour... But this recognition belongs, in no small part, to every person who has trusted me to point a camera at them, tell their story, be ridiculous with me, dance, sail beautifully, or simply show up.
Thank you for giving me something worth telling... And congratulations to my fellow finalists, Dillon Scott, Katelyn O’Donoghue and Nathan Brady. What a lovely group to find myself amongst.
Whatever happens on awards night, today I’m just going to enjoy this.

Happy Sunday, you beautiful people!
Yesterday we sailed like champions. Today I move like an archaeological discovery.
The trophy is imaginary, note to self...just remember, the spirit may be willing, but the rotator cuff keeps receipts.
