The Messinian Association of South Australia President Martha Ioannides and the Executive Committee, along with members, their families and friends, proudly commemorated 205 years since the Liberation of Kalamata on 23rd March 1821, and Greek Independence Day.
Kalamata was the first city to raise the Greek flag, marking the beginning of the uprising against the Ottoman Empire that had ruled for 400 years. The day serves as a reminder of proud Hellenic identity and the heroic and successful fight for freedom and independence.
Special invited guests included the Consul-General of Greece in Adelaide Dr Alexandra Theodoropoulou and Prof Andreas Takis, Very Reverend Father Diogenis Patsouris and Presvytera Anna Patsouris, Mayor of West Torrens Michael Coxon, Cr George Demetriou, Cr Zoi Papafilopoulou, Chloe Kourakis Member of SA Multicultural Commission and Vania Magarian.
The Advanced Group of the Messinian Dance School, dressed in beautiful traditional Greek costumes, showcased their well-choreographed Greek dancing styles, with the tsoliathes focusing on some eye-catching techniques.
