Thank you to everyone who joined us today for the Torquay RSL Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration.

We were fortunate to have a beautiful winter’s day as veterans, families and members of our community came together to remember and honour all Australians who served in Vietnam — those who returned home, those who never did, and those who carried the lasting impact of their service throughout their lives.

This year marks 60 years since the Battle of Long Tan, one of the most significant battles involving Australian forces during the Vietnam War. In extremely difficult conditions, Australian soldiers demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience and mateship.

Around 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, and for many, the return home was not met with the recognition, respect or support their service deserved.

While we cannot change the way our Vietnam veterans were received home, we can ensure that today — and into the future — they know their service mattered, their sacrifice mattered, and they will not be forgotten.

To our Vietnam veterans and their families, thank you for your service, your courage and all that you have given to our country.

Yesterday our President represented the Torquay RSL at the North Geelong Vietnam Memorial service in the lead up to Vietnam Veterans Day.

This is the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, a defining moment for Australian and New Zealand forces. This is the reason we pause to reflect on the 18th of August.

Tomorrow, Torquay locals can reflect on the service of Vietnam Veterans at the Memorial Garden at the rear of the Torquay RSL at 11am. Further details at the link 👇

SCRAP THE VETERAN CAP

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs is proposing a $5,000 annual cap on allied health services for Veteran Card holders from 1 July 2027.

For veterans with complex healthcare needs, this could mean restricted access to essential services such as physiotherapy, psychology, podiatry and occupational therapy.

Veterans’ healthcare should be based on clinical need — not an arbitrary dollar figure.

A petition has been launched calling on the Australian Government to reject the proposed cap and guarantee veterans continued access to clinically necessary treatment.

Our veterans served their country. They shouldn’t have to fight for the healthcare they were promised.

Tomorrow, the 18th of August, the Torquay RSL will hold a commemoration to honour and remember all those who served during the Vietnam War.

📍 Memorial Garden – rear of the Torquay Bowls Club
🕚 Commencing at 11:00am

The service will be followed by a light lunch, and everyone is welcome to attend.

Please join us as we come together to recognise the service, courage and sacrifice of our Vietnam veterans.

It was a special moment to recite the Ode for the first time at Bells Beach Brewing.

It was great to see many community members stop, listen, and hear the stories that connect us to those who have served before us.

A sincere thank you to our Secretary, Daryll Topp, for delivering the stories and reciting the Ode. We look forward to making this an ongoing meaningful tradition with our friends at Bells Beach Brewing

A huge thank you to the amazing volunteers who gave up their personal time to support this year’s ANZAC Appeal.

On Friday we celebrated their efforts with a thank you lunch, recognising the incredible contribution they made to our veteran community. Together, they helped raise over $20,000 for veterans and their families.
