✨ ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | SALLY FITTS ✨

We’re delighted to shine a spotlight on Sally Fitts, whose exhibition Flight is currently on show here at Hoop Gallery.

For Sally, drawing has always been at the heart of her artistic practice. After rediscovering her creative self and completing formal studies in visual and fine arts, she has explored a range of mediums, including painting, collage and sculpture, while continuing to return to the expressive possibilities of drawing.

In Flight, Sally turns her attention to the beautiful and beguiling raven. Inspired by the movement and collective behaviour of birds in flight, her works explore the delicate balance between individuality and connection, movement and stillness, form and abstraction.

Working with indigo pencil and pigment on heavy paper, Sally incorporates indigo fabric and paper collage to create layered, tactile compositions. Her considered palette evokes a sense of mystery, intuition and quiet contemplation, while the forms of the ravens invite us to look closer at the rhythms and relationships that unfold in nature.

With a practice grounded in curiosity and a love of materials, Sally creates works that are both intricate and atmospheric, offering viewers an opportunity to pause, observe and discover.

Landscape Painting | 5-Week Program | From November 2nd 🎨

This is a small, focused group, which means plenty of personalised guidance, thoughtful feedback and genuine one-on-one support. If you’ve been wanting to deepen your painting practice (or finally give landscapes a proper go), this is the perfect space to do it.

We’ll meet Mondays from 6:00–8:30 PM and spend our evenings slowing down, refining technique, understanding colour relationships, and building strong compositions. Each week is designed to help you grow in confidence so you can continue painting independently beyond the course.

During the first week, we cover colour theory and colour mixing, the crux of painting. In Week 2, we discuss what makes a successful composition before choosing our preferred one. We then spend the remaining three weeks developing and completing one painting.

Spots are limited to keep the experience intimate.

🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | HEATHER STEWART
We’re delighted to be showcasing the work of Heather Stewart at Hoop Gallery in her current exhibition, Unseen.

Living and working at Moriac, Heather has been a practising artist for 40 years. Her multidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing and sculpture, underpinned by a lifelong passion for drawing. Heather holds a PhD by Research in art history, theory and practice and has exhibited widely, including at Geelong Gallery, Qdos, Metropolis, Port Jackson Press and Morwell Regional Gallery.

In Unseen, Heather explores the invisible forces that shape our perception of reality — from the muscles and bones that create movement, to memory, intellect and emotion. Her paintings, drawings and sculptures invite us to look beyond appearances and consider what might exist beneath the surface.

A major influence on this body of work is pioneering performer Loïe Fuller, whose swirling fabric concealed the human body and transformed movement into something almost otherworldly.

🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | TRUDY CAMPBELL
We’re shining a light on Trudy Campbell, an emerging artist, writer and poet living and working on Wadawurrung Country in Torquay, Victoria.

Trudy’s practice is drawn to stories hiding in plain sight. In her first solo exhibition, Going Going Gone, she combines digital photographic collage, drawing and found imagery with the bold visual language of film and propaganda posters.

At the heart of the series is the Victorian grassland earless dragon — a tiny, endangered species whose habitat is increasingly threatened by housing development across the volcanic plains west of Melbourne.

But Trudy’s work asks us to look beyond one species. Going Going Gone explores the tension between human expansion and the survival of the other species that share our environment, inviting us to consider what might be hidden beneath the familiar landscapes of suburbia — and the footprint we leave behind.

“Trudy doesn’t see art as a way of having all the answers. She’d rather make work that catches your attention, gives you something to think about, and perhaps stays with you a little longer than expected.”
We think that’s exactly what this work does.

🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | ANTONY TWINING
We’re delighted to be showcasing the work of Antony Twining at HOOP Gallery.

With an artistic practice spanning more than four decades, Antony works across painting, drawing and ceramics, bringing together colour, shape, pattern, texture and experimentation in works that are playful, spontaneous and deeply considered.

Antony’s abstract paintings draw inspiration from landscape, domestic spaces, travel, music and everyday objects. His vibrant use of colour and expressive lines and forms create impressions and evoke feelings rather than simply representing the world literally.

His travels have also played an important role in his work. A series inspired by Morocco responds to the country’s distinctive architecture, archways, palm trees and vibrant colours, while his connection to the Surf Coast finds expression in abstract interpretations of the sea, waves, rocks, sunlight and atmosphere.

In his ceramic practice, experimentation is at the heart of the process. From hand-built and wheel-thrown forms to sculptural animal figures and unique functional sets, Antony embraces the unpredictable possibilities of clay, glaze, heat and colour. Each piece is an opportunity to explore something new.

For Antony, art is a continual journey — driven by curiosity, experimentation and a desire to discover new possibilities.
