It's a Bloke Thing

It's a Bloke Thing The 'It’s a Bloke Thing Prostate Cancer Luncheon is an annual fundraising event benefiting various men’s health and research programs.

SAVE THE DATE - 2026 Wagners Its A Bloke Thing Foundation Luncheon is on 21 August. It’s A Bloke Thing is a not-for-profit (NFP) foundation that hosts annual fundraising and awareness-raising events for Prostate Cancer Research. The events include the highly anticipated, annual Wagners It’s A Bloke Thing Prostate Cancer Luncheon – now the largest day-time fundraising event in Queensland. The inaug

ural It’s A Bloke Thing Prostate Cancer Luncheon was held in Toowoomba in 2011, and has since become a significant fundraising event, benefiting various men’s health and research programs, including the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Toowoomba Base Hospital Foundation. An education program has been funded to continue its important work of delivering practical, life-saving health education across Queensland as part of our It’s A Bloke Thing roadshow. In addition, the funds raised from the event also enable a prostate cancer nurse to be employed full-time in South West Queensland (based in Toowoomba). This means that patients from this region no longer need to travel to Brisbane for specialist care and treatment. Excitingly, the It’s A Bloke Thing Luncheon has now also expanded to Darwin, with the inaugural Darwin It’s A Bloke Thing Prostate Cancer Luncheon to take place in February 2018.

Some may remember Craig Donovan from IOR, who bravely shared his prostate cancer journey with us last year.

Like many men, Craig had no symptoms. It was only after attending one of Ruth’s Education Roadshows that he decided it was time to follow up with a PSA test, which unfortunately resulted in a prostate cancer diagnosis. Although Craig had a family history of prostate cancer, he had let his regular testing slip, leaving eight years between PSA checks.

Today, Craig is determined to turn his experience into a lesson for others, encouraging men to speak with their doctor and get that simple PSA blood test done.

Craig’s story is a powerful example of the impact our Education Roadshow continues to have in communities and workplaces across Australia, helping men understand their risk, start important conversations, and take action when it comes to their health.

Because of his father’s diagnosis, Rodney began regular PSA testing at age 40 and for years, it was just part of his routine health checks. He never expected prostate cancer to affect him personally until his doctor noticed an elevated PSA levels that changed everything.

Family history is a significant risk factor for prostate cancer, with around 15% of Australian cases occurring in men who have a family history of the disease.

A busy week for our roadshow as Ruth visited BAI Communications in Sydney, where more than 160 staff joined both online and in person to hear about the importance of making a date to check your prostate.

Thank you Chris, for bravely sharing your journey over the past eight weeks following a recent prostate cancer diagnosis. The presentation sparked important conversations that continued over morning tea. A great morning that highlights why It’s a Bloke Thing exists.... to keep the conversation going.

Eighteen years ago, Lionel was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. Within six days of receiving the news, he began an intensive treatment journey that included a prostatectomy, chemotherapy and 36 rounds of radiation therapy.

Lionel knows that without that blood test, he wouldn’t be here today. Tragically, 11 Australian men lose their lives to prostate cancer every day, highlighting the importance of early detection and regular health checks.

As part of Men’s Health Week, our educator Kathryn had the opportunity to speak with Toowoomba Region Council staff about the importance of knowing your number through a simple PSA blood test.

👏 A big thank you to everyone who attended as early detection of prostate cancer saves lives, and understanding your PSA level is an important step in taking control of your health.

Awareness starts with a conversation, and Men’s Health Week is an important reminder for men to start those conversations, understand their risk factors, and take proactive steps to prioritise their health and wellbeing.

“When I was diagnosed, I said alright, I can overcome this, it’s not going to beat me.”

Hear Wayne’s story with prostate cancer. His story is a powerful reminder that prostate cancer often develops silently without obvious symptoms. Early detection gave Wayne options, time, and a clear path forward, something he now strongly encourages every man to prioritise.
